Rearview Mirror reattachment
I know this is minor question but, I need to reinstall my rearview mirror. It fell off yesterday when I was cleaning the window.
The whole thing fell off. I thought I could remove the quarter size metal attachement part from the mirror to make the regluing easier. Can you separate the metal attachment part from the mirror or do I need to attache all as a single part? I can not figure out how to separate the metal attachment from the mirror itself.
Any help would be appreciated.

I don't think the mirror mechanism comes apart. If you can't get the quarter size piece out of the the mirror base, I would sand the gluing surface (metal) and use rear view mirror adhesive (Permatex?). The glue grabs very quickly and you won't have to hold it by hand for more than 5 minutes. Then I would use lots of masking tape and let it cure overnite.

If it were still on the glass you would tap the mirror upwards to loosen it - its a friction fit. You can purchase the tabs seperately also. Don't try to mount the thing whole - it won't be at all easy. To remount use one of the generic adhesive kits and clean the glass really well. Make sure you get the right position since unlike most mounts the Porsche one has no up/down or side to side movement - only the fixed pivot. If you can see where the old one was mark it with masking tape on the outside before you clean the glass on the inside.

Just got done doing this myself--fell off in my hand two days ago. It was hard getting the two pieces apart but I did succeed--I had to push a dart (as in throwing darts) up the center between the black tongue from the mirror part and the silver part from the disc (there is a groove in the center). Then I used a screw driver to pry the two pieces apart from the upper edge. After they came apart I could see that the dart was really not necessary; as Alan says, it's just a friction piece. That said, I had tried prying for a while and nothing was budging--could be the dart helped created a little gap that made undoing the two pieces easier--could be that eventually I was just able to get the pieces to slide. Good luck.
As far as reattaching goes I bought a kit from autozone that works well; instructions are on back. Good tip was to use crayon on the outside of the windshield before you clean the old adhesive off so you can be sure to put it back in the same place. The kit comes with a cleaner/activator towelette--scrap the windshield and button with a razor blade first, use the towelette to clean both surfaces and then place one drop of the adhesive on the center of the button. Put back on the windshield (this is the step I am at currently--it says to hold in place for one minute but after about ten seconds the button was not moving a millimeter anyone--so make sure you put it where you want it!

Thanks guys for the help. Finally got the pieces separated. Good ideas about marking the outside glass to make sure it is located properly.
Thanks Again.

+1 on letting it sit overnight before hanging mirror back on. It may seem to be ready before that, but from past experience you will find the mirror on the floor again in a few days- if not the next if you don't let the glue have time to cure first.

Mine felt too... I went to a glass shop and they reglue it for free. Perfect job.
He scraped the old glue with a razor blade.
Then cleaned the glass with a special cleaner, and now it's rock solid.
I heard after that they normaly do that kind of job for free or for very little as it's the kind of service that help their reputation.

In a couple of cars I have used the Autozone (or where ever you pick it up from) rear view mirror glue and it didn't last. I even had a windshield replaced in my truck and the professional re-mounted the mirror, which only lasted a couple of years.
My last reattachment: scrape off with razor blade, then super glue. So far so good. I remembered someone else on Rennlist had posted that crazy glue works fine for this job and thought I'd give it a shot.
