Tailpipe,
That's the sort of info we have been seeking. Care to share? What and how did they use better than original. Who did the work?

Chinese Water Pumps
There are some 928 water pumps currently on Ebay under the Hamburg Technic brand. I purchased one last year under the advertising as OE and OEM. These have no casting numbers and very rough and poor casting. On research I believe these are the ones coming in from China. The closet this company gets to Germany is in name only. Needless to say I won't be using it!! Buyer beware.

With so many known failures of rebuilt waterpumps there is a risk there....so you have to ask yourself is a $129 rebuilt pump worth the $170 vs a new $295 pump? Or in other words how much is your engine-valvetrain worth....$170?
However if a new manufactured pump can be sourced for $150 with the same quality...I think there would be a market there!

Tailpipe, What is the actual gaurantee? A 79 non interference engine owner has little to lose. The others who own interference engines are taking thousands of dollars of risk.
Roger, sounds like a great deal for a brand new pump and I appreciate the work on our behalf. That sounds like an awesome price and I like the idea of not having a core charge to hassle with.
Cheers,
Constantine

Gazo56,
These are the WP's I am considering - why do you think they come from China as they are made in Germany?? I am really interested in what you have to say. What is your basis for the made in China tag??? The castings are excellent quality when comapred to the Laso sand casting. What makes you think it is bad???
Please respond with facts not retoric please?

Burning Brakes
The company I used here is Monarch rebuilding in London Ontario Canada i can get you the number if u like they did the work for me about 5 yrs ago. They said that the seal and bearing in the water pump for these cars are the cheapest ones available. They cut down the backside of the impeller and put a thicker bearing and higher quality seal thier comment was that the pump should outlast the car if it fails bring it back and they will replace it np, they were very surprised that porsche would use materials so cheap when the difference in quality parts was less than $10. The only thing extra I did was to put a small dot of tig weld between the impeller and the shaft just for a little added insurance after they machined so much away on the impeller. I would have to check my bill but if I recall the actual price was $72 + taxes, less than 1 hr labour plus parts

Considering the state my car is currently in, I'm just about to order a new water pump and I'm interested in any good solution. I have no desire to install a rebuilt pump if new is available and that much better, but if a rebuild is truly a better solution then I'm all for it. Roger I was planning on ordering the new pump from you this week!
