Default Silly Question - Steering Rack

Would a leaky rack and pinion have oil dripping out of it or red ATF?

Hopefully red ATF.

By the way is that the euro car I saw for sale up in Myrtle Beach recently?

No way I'm ready to get rid of it yet! It would appear the shop that fixed my rack and pinion lied to me >.> and now I'm turning my own wrench.

P.S. Saw the one offered in myrtle beach, looks like fun to me.

I think it really depends on your car's history. I've had a couple of racks in my 82 now and the last one I put in called for all of the ATF to be flushed and to use only power steering fluid (which is clear). I'm no expert. Do some searching...I seem to recall this issue being brought up before.

What is the color of the oil in there now?

That MB car is the same color as yours, except the door jams and engine bay are brown. Really lazy repaint.

you should be using ATF or Dextron 3 in the power steering system of the 928. Thats what called out in the WSM
Can you please add more info about your leak.
Are the boots filled with oil ? is it leaking from one of the screwed locking rings along the rack body? What was done to the rack prior to the leak? Have the power steering lines been replaced? as well as the resivour?>
When you make a full lock turn do you back off an inch so the pressure is released in the rack?

When I lived in Myrtle Beach years ago there was a guy with a blue OB who worked right down the street from where I lived. I wonder if it's his car.

The Power Steering Fluid residing in the decent-condition reservoir is almost bright red, kind of like a velvet carpet. The steering wheel started grinding again, which prompted I take a look around. There is oil on the underside of pretty much everything on the right side (standing outside looking towards the windshield).

I can't tell where it's leaking yet, because it's pretty much everywhere. I'll get back to you after massive cleaning efforts. And my oil levels have been down lately. And the PSF levels have not.

Note: I could be mistaking oil for PSF with lots of gunk in it.

You actually get a grinding noise when you turn your wheel? Does it take a certain amount of wheel turn to get this noise?

Negative, just a light grinding and slight resistance in steering.

Power steering on a 928 is ATF/Dex III and is red - when mixed with mud/dust/road debris under the car it is the same colour as engine oil. Dab it gently with the corner of a paper kitchen towel - if the towel is stained red it is a PS leak. If engine oil colour it is engine oil leak - probably oil pan gasket.

After an hour of wiping and half a roll of shop paper towels, I'm pretty sure I've got it. Thanks for everybody's input, looks like the problem is the oil pan gasket blowing oil over everything. The power steering grinding is probably the loose belt, like merlin says.
