1st gear shifts early rest of gears shift perfect
I have a 85' 5.0l 32v auto and my first gear shifts at 4900rpms while the other gears shift at redline. I have read many posts but can't seem to find an answer. Is something wrong internally or is there adjustment I can make. Thanks
P.S. Thanks rennlist because of you guys i've fixed alot of problems on my 928.

with cable tighter it usually only take a half turn or less if the cable was adjusted close to properly if you turned the cable say 1 or 2 turns then it might be over adjusted
But follow the adjustment proceedure in the WSM for best results , and it may take you going out with a small wrench and testing your results, like I said once the cable is close to perfect it usually only takes a 1/4 to 1/2 turn to get things perfect

Mine does that most of the time also. Some days 1st will go to redline, most of the time it won't. The rest of the gears go all the way up. The engine feels much stronger on the days 1st goes all the way up. I dunno. Hope someone has a solution.

It doesn't seem to matter if I leave it in D or 2. It shifts right at 4900rpms. Even if i'm at half-throttle it shifts at 4900rpm.
So it looks like i'm not the only person with the problem and no one knows a solution yet. Damn Keep the suggestions coming i'm going to ticker with it all day so I'll post my findings later.

So today I drove it around adjusting the transmission cable. I loosened and tightened it from 1-6 turns in both directions and it never once shifted past 4900rpms in first. I know later autos don't start out in first usually but they can redline in first when they do. I think the early 4spd autos start out in first but shift early. My guess is a compitent auto expert could adjust then its being rebuilt.
Any other ideas that I could try to see if I can get it to redline in first?

Did the adjustments have any effect on shifting? Not trying to be critical but if it didn't, you adjusted the wrong cable. If it held onto or let go of shifts as you adjsuted, then you got the right cable. Adjust it how you'd like the car to shift. Next get a midi-vac and start checking vacuum. Start on the modulator located above the exaust on the tranny where the vacuum line connects. It should hold 12 psi or so rock solid. If it bleeds vacuum, replace ($48 bucks or something). Next check the vacuum line that runs from that to the "spider", a seven way vacuum splitter located on top of the intake where 7 vacuum lines intersect. If that line doesn't hold vacuum, bypass it with a new line to the modulator. It's in a hard place to get to so it's easier to re-route with a new line.
Have you replaced the filter and fluid? Have you gone to synthetic fluid? Both are good ideas. My 1-2 shift came later just by doing synthetic.
