Ok I am going to replace the front main seal on my 1984 928 euro 5 spd. What do I need to be aware of and where should I really use caution? I have done some searching but have not found a write up on the job. Also does anyone have a trick or tip to emulate the flywheel holding tool?
Thanks

It is the FULL timing belt job with one addition ....pry out old seal / pound in new one. The 5 speed may hold the engine enough for you to crack the crank bolt loose. There is a Porsche tool looks a bit like a toilet bowl plunger but made of hard plastic used to drive in the seal by putting pressure on the full 360 some use plastic irrigation pipe as a substitute and tapping carefully around and around.

All I have to add is to be sure that you put grease in the lip seal & that a thin layer around the outside edge will help installation.

You already know this, but its so important, be extremely careful not to nick the crankshaft during removal of the old one, which may require heavy manipulation of the body of the old seal.
It may take a very long handle on a 27 mm (i.e. 1 1/6" ) socket to break that crank bolt loose. Took a pipe on the end of a 3/4 drive handle in my case.
I needed the flywheel lock.

You may also need a gear puller for the crank gear. And be patient with the harmonic balancer, it will feel like it's not moving, but with enough lube and pulling on opposite sides it will eventually come off.

When you tap the new seal in do not set it all the way back, the correct position is flush with the outer edge of the housing. Engine assembly lube works well to prevent the seal from running dry until the oil gets to it. You may also want to consider cam and oil pump seals too
Good luck!

do all the front seals while you are there they are cheap it only takes a few minutes more and then you know everything is good for another 30 yrs decide how old your water pump is it is right there it would only take a few more minutes to change that as well check your hoses if they have never been changed they prolly aren't far behind the seals in being degraded look really close at your power steering return line if its really soft replace it also check the bushings and bearings on the belt tentioner and the fan pully
i made my own flywheel tool with a piece of 1 by 1/4 inch flat bar about three inches long with two holes that match where the clutch slave cyl bolts on it has a short piece of 1 by 1/2 inch "C" channel about 3 inches long welded to the center of the flat bar my tool tightens in the teeth of the flywheel when its bolted in use a minimum of a half inch drive ratchet to remover the crank bolt you will prolly need to put a pipe on that as well. its a drity job but you shouldn't have any probs
