Default ! brake warning light

The (!) on my dash is on intermittently, on the right is a little sign saying brakes. I did pads, front and rear a few months ago and they all check out. The only part of the brake system I haven't checked is the e-brake which works great. Why am I getting this light?

Could be numerous things. Next time it happens, hold the brake pedal down and try turning the ignition key slightly back to the left. Could be the contacts in the switch.

Could be one of the pad wear sensor wires slipped out of a pad, is cut, or somehow is contacting a ground.

Can the warning be cancelled? If so check the pad sensor and parking brake. If it cant be cancelled check the fluid and pressure:

I had that for a while on my 1987 S4 auto. The fix was to thoroughly clean all of the accumulated crap from the ABS sensors. It took a while but it worked.

Just wanted to give an update to this thread. Thanks for the above comments. I put this aside for a while and just now am doing work on the torque tube, so added this to the WYIT list. before parking the car the light could be cancelled but would come on again at random. Ignition seemed fine according to above test. I pulled the abs sensors last night and WOW were they clogged with debris.. Seemed magnetized to the sensor. I thoroughly cleaned them and will see what becomes of it when the car is together again. Regardless, they Needed to be done!

Thanks,
Ben
