Need help identifying a torn hose
From now on with S4s with about 100k or more miles I'm replacing the filler neck - if it's plastic - not just replacing the gasket. Recently I compared three filler necks with mileage between 80k and 150k and each one was warped in the same spot: the front driver-side corner. The warp on the 80k was barely noticeable, the warp on the 120k neck was obvious with a straight edge, and the warp on the 150k was obvious with Mark-I eyeball.
This side-by-side comparison was prompted by the 120k-mile neck leaking at the front-left corner less than two years after I replaced the gasket.

I buy parts from the Big Three.
I read Rennlist.
I have the Workshop Manuals and read them.
I have J.Moorehouse's CD and read whats on them.
I think carefully about everything I do.
I go slowly if I'm not sure and check, and re-check my references (listed above.)
If I get frustrated or tired I take a break.
I do my own work.
You are among a lot of knowledge here in this forum and a lot of people willing to help you out. But if you are not strapped in for the long haul, dump the car.
Sit back and let me tell you my story.

It all started about 3 years ago. I didn't know it yet but I was about to get bitten by a Shark.
The company was holding its own and I wanted another hi performance carriage.
I paid a local company 500 bucks to go get it.
When It arrived at my door step, I got that same sinking feeling you got about your possible TBF.
The interior that looked so good in the Pix was actually a well doctored mess, every hose on the car was shot. The tranny was leaking fluid too bad to drive. the TB was visibly dry rotted. it had a really bad front end oil leak, the tranny slipped in 2nd gear. The great looking white paint was a very poor Macao job.
So I figured well it is what it is... lets get to work....
I did the h2o pump and TB, brakes all the way around, fixed all the hoses. Replaced the steering wheel bearing, New oil pressure sensor.
Got the car ready for PA state inspection.... never drove the car more that 4 miles and had it over 4 months.THEN came across a non running 89 it was a repo.
I made a deal to buy it for my car and 2700.00. The car didn't run because it needed a new LH... got that fixed, drove it around the block and the engine quit while sitting at a light... cranked like it had a dead battery... Bought a battery, fired it up and went around the block,,, same thing....
Then I replaced the starter, same thing happened again.. OK so now I find rennlist
and learn the reality about TBF. I have the car checked and sure enough TBF beyond repair.
So I trade for a 73 911 converted slant nose for the 928 and $4700. First of all, I didn't fit in the thing and no PA inspection station would pass the car because of the non DOT head lighting.... So that had to go......

Trade it even up for a 79 euro. Did a TON of work to it to make it right. Go to get it aligned and guess what? The ****ing thing was bent like a banana. Yeah no ****, that was the frame shops exact words..."Its bent in the shape of a banana". OK 2000$ later we have it bent back into shape and it aligns right.

OK then I find a 84 near here for sale and buy it for ****s and giggles.....get it running... start to play with it and I find a rennlist spoken for 85-5 speed. Said to need only a torque tube.
OK quick sale of the 79 and 84 in a package deal, enough to buy this said to be really nice 85.
Get the 85 home and it is a nice car. But even so it still needed:
Motor mounts
Front shifter bearing
rear axial
Torque tube
Inner and outer ball joints
clutch hose
tires from a bad alignment and the 3000 mile drive home
upper and lower ball joint boots and i am sure some other odds and ends I don't remember.
and this is the car I drive today.
But ya know what? I stuck with it and now i have what I feel is one of the best 928's on the road. Even at 170,000 miles I would not hesitate to take this car to CA and Back.

Please dont say that ,im going crazy with excitement about the car, this is my dream car and tonight i was just sitting inside of it in aw,this car is auwsome, and i need your help,so dont say that.thanks
Your torn hose is the front driver-side cam cover breather hose. Its a common hose failure on original S4's (mine had the same problem when I got it).
What it means is that your car is completely original - likely no one has taken the intake manifold apart, so you're probably got a heap of vacuum and fluid leaks and dried seals in there.

Your oil leak could be from one of the cam cover seals, however, its more likely that its from the bottom of the engine - either oil pan gasket, or front/rear main seals.
However, before you do any work at all on your car, you need to get it up on stands, and check the flex plate movement and crankshaft end-play at the flywheel. Only after making sure you don't have thrust-bearing failure, is it worth doing anything to the car.

Xlot is correct about the hose and it's location if it were a UK or AUS or NZ car - as I am sure you've realised you took a picture of the passenger side of a left hand drive car - don't worry blame Napoleon, it's all his fault that the uneducated majority of the world drive on the wrong side of the road.

I think I saw your picture in the dictionary under persistance.
