Default The Cat Needs To Go (overheating cat thread)

Ok I've done everything I can, "Jabber" starts on the first (or second) crank, the idle is stable, the throttle response is what I would expect (instant), I have leaned the AF mix as far as humanly (or sharkanly) possible, timing is right on, problem the cat runs over 400 deg. this frightens me (fire hazard), this will not do, my guess is that it is blocked up, so it must go, any other ideas, I have run out.

The average light off temperature at which the catalytic converter begins to function ranges from 400 to 600 degrees F. The normal operating temperature can range up to 1,200 to 1,600 degrees F.

Well thanks Zeus; I openly admit that when it comes to emissions equipment I am clueless. So the cat is likely operating the way it is meant to, I still have a problem http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creosote not to mention the fact that it is flammable, our cars have an underbelly that is covered with it. Let me tell ya when the cat heats up, I get out the fire extinguisher, paranoid? May be, but I would rather pollute a little than risk it. Do modern cats run this hot also? I have never noticed this kind of heat from my Nissan. Having an air fed blast furnace under my car, no thanks.

Basically all cats work around the same temperatures. It's an exothermic reaction. They add about 50C to the exhaust temperature when they are oxidizing.
