Default Transmission switch PRND32

87 S4 auto.
Is this transmission switch on the side of the tranny "serviceable"?

It basically controls the PRND32 and reverse lights....all of which have never worked on my car in ..oh..7yrs...since i bought it.

Is there a way to trouble shoot it via the pins? i havent seen anything in the manuals.

How much is this bad boy to replace $$$ for those that know.

I replaced the one on my Mercedes wagon - same gearbox and it was about $30 IIRC.

There is a 6 pin connector in the spare tire well. Check red/blk wire for power. This wire supplies power for shift indicator and back up lamp function of switch.

Makes me think about how you could do the same thing on a manual. R would come off the reversing lights. N 1 2 3 4 5 would be more difficult. Has anyone done this on a track car?

Tony, are you saying the display lights on the gauge face do not light up? You may already know there is a separate wiring harness for these to the gauges. I ended up replacing burnt out bulbs in the gauge and they all work now. You can check this by using a 9v battery, unplugging the harness behind the gauges and checking the bulbs by the pins. (you may have done this already and that's why the switch is suspect)

actually no i havent done that...good idea though. I cant imagine all of them burned out at the same time. Then again, ive installed 4 "new" injectors on one cyl bank to find them all -plugged ages a go, that was a head scratcher...ya never know.. I had always heard that the switch was a common fail point. The lack of reverse tail lights leads me to the switch.

i have done this already and unfortunatly i had to take the senic route. my 85 euro has a little creme colored micro switch that is mounted on the ignition cylinder shaft this is were the power comes from the switch to the lights on the dash . it is a 911 part . good news is you do not have to drop the cluster . but the switch is what sends power to the switch and in turn the lights

The relay that controls the interior light circuit also has the gbox selector position lights.

hmmm...i will look into that as well once i get her powered up again. Just installed the TT, tranny and rear suspension last night. Final Torques on that stuff today and start with the motor. There is a light at the end of the tunnel...just right now its not my PRND32 lights
Good thing is, the tranny switch is all cleaned off and is very easy to get to if i have to remove it.

Sorry Tony should have said fuse #24, it controls the rear hatch trigger and interior lights which include PRND32.............the relay controls the int. light dimmer.

Tony,
have a look at page 59 and 60 of the service info manual of MY 1985 Euro or 112/113 US model 1985
But the 1987 schematic is showing the same. I had burnt out bulbs
regards
Theo

Bringing up an old thread here.

On my '87, interior lights, PRND32, hatch release and reverse lights don't work. I haven't looksed at the fuses yet, but was curious what the result was.

I need to replace this switch on my 84'. I have an issue with the car not starting while in "P". I have to drop the trans into "N" in order for the car to be started. I have done the adjustment per the shop manual and still have the same problem. Would be nice to know the Merc part# for this part as I'm sure the cost would be less than Porsche. This part is available from at least two of the big three but I'm not going to list prices.
