Default Poll: GTS Pricing Trend

Over the next three years, what do you think? (really). In the changing market for older sports cars, (especially for us 928 afficionados), is it time to pull the trigger on a GTS... NOW before prices increase?...or wait until the gas price scare and market competition shake a few more loose and the prices continue to go down?

Obviously, condition and miles affect values. For the survey, let's say a GTS that's certainly not minty but is in average very good condition (aren't most of them?), no wrecks, no expensive issues, very good interior, good leak-down figures, well-maintained, etc. Maybe 7 out of 10 overall condition?

Don't think of your car when responding (your car is always worth more because of what you've done to it and the love-affair thing), but the average GTSs you'd expect to see come up for sale. Remember, all 928 owners are not Rennlist 928 fanatics. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems like more GTSs have been showing up for sale lately. Is that a trend? If so, what can we expect the pricing to do?

I can see the poll and it is odor neutral. But I don't have a good answer to the question.

I think the GTS 5-Speed models will continue to creep upwards price wise. But I don't know what the automatics will do. I don't think they will ever be cheap, though.

In Europe prices have gone slowly up for few years now. It used to be possible to buy early 5sp GTS for 15-16k euros. Now there isn't anything under 20k and even automatics are 3-5k higher up than this time last year. Right time to buy was two years ago. I think this trend will continue unless something really serious happens to world economy or fuel prices. If prices do not start to go up in US market soon Europeans will buy all US GTS away since US$ is so undervalued at the moment.

Interesting topic....a couple years ago when the economy was red hot and people were flush with cash I would say nothing but up up up....in todays world I say flat at best...since everything is coming down FAST.....

Which I like....means I can afford nicer toys!! But for the really excellent 95 GTS 5 speeds....they will hold value regardless of economy.....its the 50k+ mile ones that will be hurt the most.....

Prices will be mainly unchanged in the next three years and longer.

Those that have them paid the same premium for their cars in most cases, they also think that these cars are "Rare" "Elite" and more desireable then the rest of the 928 line, so I vote no change...

I know you want one really bad Harvey, but really they are not that special. Buy the mirrors, flare your rear quarters and your S4 can be just as special!!..

But nothing compares to the '86.5 (otherwise known as the '86 GT-S)

I think prices have come down and stabilized a bit. There have been at least 4-5 very good condition 5spd cars that have gone for $35-$39K in the last year. I think there was some Wilhoit play that jacked them up a bit a few years ago, but before that, you could get them for a song. I know that Randy Grubbs car here in DFW (Now Shickels car) went for Sub $30k about 5 years ago (plus or minus)

There are still the low mileage cars out there that will bring in BIG money, but for the time being (partly due in part to the economy I would imagine) I think threre are some really NICE cars going for mid to high 30's.

Shane, I like that!! (86GTS) I tell you what, I think every one of them is special and some (like the 86.5) stick out more than others. My GTS and my 79 are worlds apart, but I dig both of them just the same. I can't get rid of the 79 as I originally thought I would. And that car is VERY special to me.

On the flip side, if you don't think the GTS is very "special", take one for a ride and hit the loud pedal! Sometimes Special rymes with:

BWAAAAAHHHHHH!!

I went ahead and pulled the trigger because I figured the color combo 5 speed would be impossible to find.

Richard,

I agree w you. You have a great color combo, very clean car, upgraded suspension, etc. Definately a premium.

The market for somewhat-obscure under-rated large-v8-engine sports cars from the 1990's is probably gonna be soft for a while as gas prices and weak economy chew on the confidence of would-be enthusiasts and collectors.

I don't think the economy will have any impact on any low production porsche.

Considering less than 200 5 speed GTS's made for US consumption, those really interested in these cars usually aren't concerned over a few thousand $$ if the right car comes along.

As RKD in OKC said and I myself have done if the right color combo well maintained 5 speed is available price is relative. If i had to pay a few $$ more for my car today I still would. It all depends on if the right buyer is shopping when the right seller is selling.

As always a matter of supply and demand.

Shane, you make a good point. I'm missing my '85S...but the S4 I have now seems to have a little more zip. But I liked the Guards Red color better. I agree, the best performance deal around it to get the 86.5 and put some forced air through it...or go the Louie Ott route.

I suspect most on this list would jump at a GTS if the prices got a more competative in the marketplace. I'm saving my pennies for something but either I have to put more in the cookie jar or the prices have to come down.

BTW, Shane...the woman in the office next to mine at the University is a cousin to a friend of yours there in AK land. The Alaska transplant graduated from here...her name is....lesseee....Sarah Heath when she was here. Palin now. Did she ever come to Dutch Harbor for the crabs you dole out there?

Harvey, if you bought a GTS would you drive the **** out of it like you would your '85S? I seen you at the track with that one, would you take a GTS that met your quaility control standards to the track?

Point being is most of us buy our 928s to drive 'em like we stole 'em. If you spend $35-$40k on a nice GTS would you drive it full tilt like you would a '86.5? Probably not...

Buy something that you would feel good about enjoying!! None of my '86.5s are in pristine condition and I enjoy them all the more for it!!

Sarah Heath and I was probably at U of I at the same time... I might have been raised in Idaho, but I was born in Anchorage...

I seriously doubt she has ever made it down here, voter base is not large enough to warrant it. But I'll give her some crabs...

Shane,

I have driven BOTH of mine on track! Several times actually! Great fun! The '92 went off track in the wet... WAY OFF TRACK! I was lucky there was nothing out there to hit and the grass was still so tall the car didn't even get any mud on it! It was funny! None of the flaggers even saw me go off track. I had my wife in the car at the time, but if I had not and then got stuck, I would NEVER HAVE BEEN FOUND! No wheelchair in the car w/ me when I am on track! Of course if the car had got stuck and was unseen so too would be the wheelchair so it would not do me much good either!

Funny looking back on it now.

Well, as a recent GTS buyer, I must say that I have not lost a wink of sleep over the $36.5k I paid out to get my 42k mile Guards Red 5-spd. I plan on driving it and already ordered a short throw shifter and related shifter rebuild parts from Roger. I want the shifter to be right when I bang gears and it just felt a little too soft. The first thing I did after getting it off the truck was put some new tires on it that same day. I don't care if the value goes up or down, this one is staying with me!! I love my '87 S4, but the GTS has it's titty y'all!!
