I love auto-x with my 928. I've got the 2.2 rear and a 5 speed. Only twice all season did I need to shift out of first! Shocked a lot of people, even beat on a couple of 914V8's what showed up.

I agree the drivers capabilities and experience make a lot of difference. We have a young lady who can't be more than 4'8" tall and weighs about 90 pounds that AX's with us. She took 1st away from a long time national SCCA champ 2 years ago at the regional event. SHe was driving a worked GT3 at the time. She had been driving a bone stock 924S for a while and even with little HP she would come very close to FTD against cars with far more power and braking.
No need to bash the CGTS. It is remarkably capable and took no more wear and tear than my 928GTS would ax-ing. The 928GTS is hard on the tires and pushes like crazy. The low end torque helps in the short straights but to get it through the tight turns you need to brake to a crawl to keep it from overpowering the front tires, the AWD of the CGTS helps. Add the poor driving position with helmet and there are far easier cars to Ax. Doesn't mean it can't be done, although I can assure you it would be easier for me to climb into my CTT and AX it and do well than I could my GTS. I am not inexperienced at AX. I have been doing it for years and took many 1st place trophies for events and season titles for a number of years. I am currently running in our most difficult class. I3 which is all improved 6 cylinder cars. Highly competitive and most of the 8-10 people in my class are seasoned veterans or SCCA instructors. I hope to take 3rd possibly second for the season this year.
We run about 100 cars at an event 8 runs and highly technical course which covers about .8 miles and runs on average 50 seconds. We run a cayman challenge each year where we have some of our top drivers drive the same car and see how we pair up. I came in 8th out of 25 and all of us were very close in time.
I don't deny that the 928 is a blast to power through the turns but you have to work much harder to skilfully drive an older car than any of the newer cars.

Well, I have a Cayenne GTS and wouldn't even consider autocrossing it. As Jim said, the thing weighs 5,000 pounds.... what's the point? However, one equipped with PDCC is a fine handling SUV - as good as any stock 928 I've ever owned. Better yet, one equipped with Fabspeed cat by-pass pipes sounds as good as a RMB equipped 928.... Crazy expensive? You bet but, I've had 15+ Porsches and this thing is ALL Porsche albeit a modern version of a Porsche. I love it!

ha ha ha...I autocrossed my 2007 BMW X3 with Sport Package ie., suspension, wheels, and Pirelli Rossos. I just wanted to familiarize myself with the handling so I would have a better reaction in an accident avoidance situation. I got FTD by .003 seconds! It didn't accelerate real quick an brake zones were long, but man that thing really cornered!!!

Chuck I hope my wife likes her Taureg half as much as you like it's older brother But at $15,000 for a 2004 with 60,000 miles she needs to only like it about 1/6 th as much !! She will probably be unwhelmed by the V-6 performance when it gets delivered in a week or so.

I imagine it would corner well in extreme conditions because it is WAY too stiff for general everyday.

Chuck. Nice GTS.
Can't live without a GTS can you? LOL
I agree no point in AX-ing a Cayenne other than for a once in a while in your face fun. I have seen Cayenne's raced against other Porsche's and they did quite well too. Although they had to be drifted through the tight turns.
By far one of the best AX platforms I have driven is the Cayman. Very ridge solid well balanced platform. Very easy car to drive through tight courses unlike a 928, Cayenne or early 911. Although one advantage to the early 911's is you can use the back end weight advantage to swing it around the tighter turns. Anyone can climb into a Cayman and look good first time out at an AX event they are that easy to drive.
We had an older Cayenne S AX with 4 people in it and it did very well.

I bet a set of tires on a Cayenne taken to the track don't last very long......

My wife liked her 79 928 ...She loved the sound as she accelerated through the gears I asked how many she said ALL 5 ! She had it about 5 years . I put her in a 6 cylinder Grand Cherokee but had to put on Eibach lowering springs Bilstein shocks, 18 inch rims with low profile tires because she was accustomed to flying around corners in the 928, the Jeep made her seasick . The little 6 cylinder T will be just fine ! May not be fast but she will look good driving it .....now to find some wheels ( I do have some new 18 by 10 replica twisted rims they should work)

Nope. I posted something in this forum about that topic but moderator extremeous moved it..... twice! See RV, some people do get it. Guess if it would have been a BMW convertible it would have been okay?

Probably cord them before you were done. Then again my R888's don't last too long at the track with my 911. All in good fun though.

Chuck, What a beauty.
The CGTS hit the market several months after I bought my Range Rover SC Sport which I absolutely love but I have to admit that the thought of having six manual gears at my disposal does make me wonder "what if".
Enjoy

BTW, I just sold our 2008 RRSC a couple months ago as it was just too small for me. Wish I'd known you were looking, ours was a 2k mile blk/blk with rear entertainment. Literally brand new and I sold it cheaaappp!

Chuck,
The GTS is just fine, enjoying the life of pampered luxury.
Still under 32K and looks and runs just as it did when I took ownership.
And she looks spectacular alongside the Topaz car
