Question "Our 928 Porsche headers showed an astonishing 23% horsepower gain..."

Really?

So throw these on my '78 and get 50 HP for $594.00 MSRP?

Really??

Who's bought them? Speak up - what do you think.
You guys that sell them, would you agree with their claim?

They will not fit to Motorsport X. I think 928 Motorsports makes an X-pipe that will mate to MSDS collectors now.

Based on dyno results on my GTS engine, the gain is only around 10% compared with factory HP (I don't have a before/after dyno). Gains for older engines may be higher, especially on the 16V engines whose exhaust manifolds were not as "header-like" as those used on the 32V. I'm pretty certain that gains from X and headers will not be additive but that one reduces the incremental gain from the other.

The consensus is that the best bang for the buck is X-pipe + RMB, I think.

I'm considering replacing my single pipe exhaust from front to back, since my rear and mid mufflers are rotting - my rear just fell off so it's pretty effectively bypassed right now. With my single pipe exhuast, I can't make use of an X-pipe.

Is this the best route for me? Watcha guys think?

I have a complete 85 setup all the way from exhaust manifolds to final muffler which should liven up an older car .... twin pipes all the way back. I'll ebay them if you are interested. Shipping can be a pain since this system is one-piece except the exhaust manifolds ... it's about 8 feet long.

On the same dyno my 79 put down 40hp less then a stock S4 with MSDS headers / Y collector & straight pipes. Otherwise 100% stock engine.

When you consider a stock S4 is rated 320 and a stock 79 is 220, that's a 60hp gain.

A "normal" exhaust with a muffler or two will lose some power, but the gains are real on the OB's.

Not to steal Heinrich's sale, like he said the pipe from the cats back with mufflers is one piece and long, would cost a ton to ship probably. I have an '85 set up, cats and back. Do not have the manifolds, you would need to get them from Heinrich. I am in Allentown, PA and go to Albany, NY almost weekly. Where in Finger Lakes are you? Could meet somewhere off Rt 81 or NYS Thruway. Let me know if you are interested.

hacker, your 79 must be loud! I have a Euro 79 5spd that goes really nicely with the stock exhaust (240bhp from the factory). What would be the best upgrade for me? Headers or a Y Pipe?

Loud? Not by my standards

The stock minifolds and Y into the CAT have to go (not sure what the Y looks like on a Euro).

The cheap upgrade is 85/86 manifolds, with a spacer for the passenger side they pretty much bolt on (I have this on my 81).

The "best" IMO is headers into a Y with a custom exhaust out the back. Pick your choice of muffler. I guess Spintech and Flowmaster make a muffter that fits very nice into the stock forward location.

Dual exhaust is not needed with a 220hp engine as long as the single is 3" or more.

On my 84 with MSDS headers and Y, I put the smallest magnaflow on it. It sits nicely on the driver's side of the transmission just in front of the rear crossmember. It sounds fantastic.

David Loyd told me pretty much the same thing a couple of years ago, so I would say that this is not uncommon.

Since when have you been talking in Kibort speak? What were the actual numbers?

With a little work, I managed 214 rwhp, 277 rwtq, sae, on a '81 auto (>320 flash tq!) with the cast iron manifolds, and factorish 2½" rear exhaust. (Thread) And it wasn't that loud.

You could use a "Y" pipe from Motorsports in SLC, or I think from 928srus too.

You posted in the thread I started about this, complete with dyno charts

A few people questioned the peak number (typical dyno BS chatter) so I'm simply trying to point out the difference with a stock S4 that ran on the same drums.
