Default ATTN: Austin 928 DIY'ers, who has R-12 gauges for an AC recharge?

Hello Austin 928'ers

I am looking for someone local that has the gauges and manifold set for the R-12 recharge. I have a new dryer and expansion valve to install in my S4 and would love to get that done this weekend.

I was told that someone in Austin had recently done this and would love to either rent equiptment and that persons experience for this little project. Roger mentioned someone who's name escapes me. But if your in Austin, i could use a hand and a set of gauges so this job can go smoothly.

Thanks

I've got my Dad's "old-as-the-hills" set and can't address the possibility of leaks. Been sitting in a box for years. If no one else comes forward let me know and we can give it a try.

Sounds good

Roger mentioned to me someone else in Austin that is i guess doing exactly what i am trying to do. So a set of hands thats been in this neck of the 928 woods would be great. I would prefer not to have to go through a learning curve with yet ANOTHER DIY procedure with these cars.

Mine needs a charge also so I'd like to see the 928 version of the procedure, too. More than willing to provide another set of hands to get dirty.

Threw the alternator belt running to the store this evening. A squeal, small puff of smoke from under the hood then the whole dash lit up. Yikes! Thank goodness home was 4 minutes away.

Don,

If youve got some of the gauges or manifold thing's to refill lets give it a go this weekend. I would prefer to host as the car isnt registered. I am also in a bit of a time crunch now. I have a bunch of stuff to pack, a bunch of stuff to sell and I have to finish this S4 all by the 30th.....or the 29th really. Then i get to drive for 3 days to CA in a u-haul! YEEHAA!

Ryan--

The hoses depend on a seal at the ends to keep the air out (vacuum in???) and to hold the freon. Old hose = old seals = possible leaks, so be carefull with anything that can be classified as 'vintage' or older.

Are you coming back to the L.A. area? Let us know where you end up. I'm half way between Austin and L.A right now, just a wee bit off the preferred route (only a hundred miles or so.) If you want to detour towards Midland/Odessa, and go west just into NM, you can use the spare bedroom. Probably cost more in fuel and time than you'd save though.

Be Sure to fuel up before you cross into Cali. Better gas, 10-20% cost savings.

Bob,

Yes moving back to Sherman Oaks, then the west side.....someplace. I should be there by the 31st of August or September 1. So I am planning on driving west starting on the 28th or 29th. I may get my dad to fly out to Austin and drive back with me in which case we could knock the drive out in just 2 days. If i do it alone i better plan on 3.

I am always hesitant when starting a NEW project ive not done before. This is another such example. Ive honestly touched every aspect of these cars between my former GT and now this S4 and its AC woes. I have heard the procedure, its been spelled out to me and it honestly seems pretty simple, I would love to eliminate any learning curve so if youve got anything to say that maybe of use, please spill the beans!

I think I will try and see what kind of charge the car has currently. As it stands when the car is running and i hit AC the compressor doesnt engage. The Relay is new, so i guess its either one of 2 things. Expansion valve is bad or just low on R12. Since i'm doing this, i figure i would break open the system, replace the expansion valve, refit those lines, replace the dryer with a new one and then proceed to put R12 back into the system and hopefully call it a day. Anything i am missing?

Don,

I am going to look for a gauge set this afternoon and may just end up doing this tonight or tomorrow. Thinking about it, i have so much to get done in the next week (I have a bunch of boxes to pack still!) I dont think i will be hosting much of anything this weekend come to think of it. If that changes though I will let you know.

Q: Will an R134a AC gauge set work with R12 if i change the fittings? Or are the gauges altogether incompatable?
