Is the number of owned 928's now a guarantee of greater 928 knowledge? I'm going to have to apply that type of reasoning to other aspects of life where I'm having difficulty excelling.

 

According to Rixter (very knowledgeable on older cars) his pre 80 car came with the spoilers front and rear.
Maybe he can chime in to clarify.
My 78 has front and rear spoilers. Either they were fitted at the factory or someone spent a ton of money to do it properly.
OB = Pre 87 8>)

 

All I am saying is that all it takes is to say OB for cars w/o spoilers and S for cars with. Makes total freaking sense and makes the point w/o having to add, I have an OB that is an S or an OB w/ the Competition package. You say I have an OB, or I have an S and done. Everyone knows exactly what the car looks like and for 99% of cars that will also mean that the S cars have more HP as well... There are not a lot of 4.5L cars w/ spoilers...

All I am saying is that LOGIC dictates that the two should have distinct a way of referring to them that is NOT ambiguous and to call a car w/ S spoilers an OB just muddies the waters.

If you were collecting 928's and you had a GTS and an S4 would you then say, "I only need one more to 'complete' the set? I need an OB." I doubt it. If you put an OB and an S side by side at a non 928 car show (no one else in the Porsche community would know, so you could even take them to a Porsche show) and asked people how they would refer to them or what they think about them or whatever, they will note the distinction of spoilers vs. none, yet here were are on the 928 list saying, "No they are all OB's." That is asinine.

But your interjection has thrown the original intention of the thread way off track. I did notice, however, that you had NO useful input that addresses the topic in any way.

I guess it could be fun to be the OB police, but I ain't seein it.

 

For the young folks around here I will repeat the background on the term OB (old bugger) one more time. Jay Kempf coined the term on the 928 email list about 5 years ago and he defined it as the early, CIS, team built 928. If it came with a spoiler, it doesn't matter. To use the term for anything else just muddies the water.

Thanks Dennis... So, the acronym does NOT mean Original Body style. I was told at one point that was the meaning of OB and THUS my contention that calling an S car an OB was illogical. BUT, considering it means Old Bugger, and that was defined as anything w/ CIS then OB is still incorrectly used many times...

As for rust prevention since w3lfd has chastised me for going WAY off topic... I would LOVE to hear more about what others have used. I have not removed the rear spoiler from my '84 S but suspect I could have problems there as well since it too had a lot of junk underneath when I got the car.

Roger, since I was always under the impression that OB was Original Body (style) yes, this is a pet peeve topic for me and gets me spun up. Now I understand OB does not mean and does not refer to what I thought it did...

A temporary fix for your rust is a liquid called rust convertor which should be available at you local autoparts store. The long term fix is to take it to a good body shop for a proper prep and respray.

OB in 928 speak is old body as in any body before 87 and thats the way it will stay in my language whatever anyone else says.
This has nothing to do with Jay or anyone else OB is Old Body style and thats it final in my book.
I will not change it for some concocted slang thown out on some email from way back when.
And for the record Dennis I AM NOT YOUNG 8>)
And for the record I have at least 10 OB's in my nest.

87-88 = TBS4 = The Best S4

90-91 = S4H = S4 with more weight.
92(ROW)-95 = GTS's, what else can you say.
