It appears you've had one those bonding experiences with your 928. I'm glad all went well.

From everything I've read here, I'm not sure if you need a 75C tstat. Esp. if your whole cooling system is operating properly. Now that you're safely in the low temp range, put an 83C in and see if you land in the middle temp.

And next time, let me know when you drinking Warsteiner. Chewy's quick when need be.

I'm not sure if I need to stick with the 75C thermostat, but since all is working now I'd rather not take things apart again! I think my old one was on its way out, anyway, as it didn't seem to open as far as the 75C one during my 'boil test'.

I'll have another GTG at my place sometime, but the next meet I'll make is the frenzy!

after four or five drives, my symptoms have returned. The temp doesn't get quite as high as before, but it does go up to the top line, maybe a little above. I can get it to run "normal" if the air temp is in the 70's with the heat on, though. It sounds like low flow to through the rad, but things worked great for a few drives! Eveything gets really bloody hot, too, top hose, bottom hose. I hate cars right now. Wife's car is broke, too! I don't understand why it went from working great to working like crap.

I'm ready to take up drinking again as my primary hobby.

do you have a IR gun to test the temps at the rad ? your gauge may be giving false readings

Yes, I have a small meter that I use for nitro-rc racing. Where are some good points to take some readings? Maybe I can "profile" my motor at idle from startup at certain physical points over time and compare it to someone else's for reference.

I do know that everything under the hood seems extremely hot - untouchable hot - after the drive. I can barely hold my hand in front of the running fan when I shut it down. Shouldn't both fans be running at this point?

As other have mentioned it is worth checking the real temps, have you checked the operation of your flaps?

Flaps were open when I stopped to check on everything, so if they failed they are failed in the open position.
