S4 - how heavy should the clutch feel?
I drove one the other day, man, the clutch was very hard to push in. Shifted great, but it took a lot of effort.
The clutch was replaced a few years ago, probably has 55-60K on it.
Is a 928 like a 944, a hellacious all day on your back job to replace the clutch?

I think they're on the heavy side too. Flushing the fluid will keep them operating their best but they're still pretty heavy.

Replacing the clutch is pretty painless, as long as you've made sure you have the right parts - if the clutch is very old, you might find you need a new release arm to go with the newer throwout bearings which have superseded the earlier ones (the S4-onwards single plate clutch got superseded by the GTS parts for '87-onwards cars).
There's some other jobs that are worth doing while in there, like removing the flywheel for resurfacing, and while its off, replacing the rear-main seal (easy on a manual gearbox car).

There's also the secret helper spring just above the clutch pedal mechanism under the dash.
Drove the car for years without knowing about it.
Uses a spring to assist in depressing the clutch.
Nice design. Mechanical leverage of the spring only exerted after the clutch pedal is being pushed in so as not to affect the clamping of the clutch.

When I got my car the clutch was heavy feeling. Started squeaking. Sprayed some gooey lube stuff up in there and not only did the squeaky creaking stop, but the clutch feel was lighter.

I've done both and the clutch on a 928 is night and day difference from a 944. Drop the center exhaust, drop the lower clutch cover (this is what is missing on the 944 and makes it such a pain), insert spacers, pull the intermediate shaft back and drop the clutch pack. Easy. Just be careful because it's heavy!
As for clutch effort, if you're replacing the clutch do the throwout bearing and pilot bearing as well, and lube everything with copper grease. That will really help the effort. But the simplest thing is the helper spring just at the top of the clutch pedal. Try an extra turn on that spring and you might be surprised at the difference. Believe it or not, the clutch on my 928 is actually lighter than my Mini, and I did make a small (half-turn) adjustment of that spring. 10-second mod.

1. Is the flywheel equally easy to get out, for resurfacing?
2. Any good threads/links with pictures? I've searched, seen a little, but wondering if there was a "go to" thread/site like there is for the belt replacement.

When you do the clutch on a 928, you really should remove the flywheel anyway so you can replace the pilot bearing. But I wouldn't resurface it unless it looks bad.
