I did the same thing Keith did.
Spent massive amounts of money on my OB to get it to the power levels of an S4.
It would have been much cheaper to just sell it, and get an S4 instead.
If you really need more power in an OB body style, you will have to spend a ton of cash.
The only cost-effective power adder is Nitrous Oxide.

Well that's a relative statement. As with anything it depends on your planning horizon. If you're looking at a few years, then yes, NOS is relatively cheap to get into, delivers plenty of grunt, but teh downside is that you need to keep refilling the bottle.
I tried to calculate it once, and it was a crazy number - something like 7 years, before you break even on a SCer vs. NOS. But I got tired of filling the bottle, so I burned the calculations, and said screw it... welll twin screw it!
I know of one 4.5l that is putting out (or close to) 400RWHP with a centrifugal SCer. But I can't mention his name as he's been banned.

Well, the main problem is that people with OBs often purchase them because they are cheaper than an s4. So they aren't always keen on the idea of dropping 5 grand on a supercharger, when they only spend 5 grand on the car to begin with. And as someone who spent a lot of money on everything except a supercharger, I can almost guarantee that it will never be enough. So someone can spend money on swapping transmissions, new cams, new intake, headers, exhaust, and so on, but will never see the kind of power they really want, until they upgrade to an s4, supercharge, or install a nitrous system. But if they are looking for really insane power, nitrous is the cheapest way to get an OB into the 400rwhp range. All the other options are more money than most OBs are worth.

So? Why is this always the argument?
Few weeks ago my friend finished up a project for a customer. He dropped a K-Tech 427 into a 79 Corvette. The engine alone is over $20,000 while a 79 is worth about the same as an OB. This is not an isolated project coming from this shop, just the most recent.
S4's are selling for under $10k left and right, so that would make a stage 2 or 3 supercharger kit out of reach since it's almost the purchase price of the car. Not to mention a stroker where the parts alone are more than any superchager kit.
I don't see this mentality on other car forums. Why here?

I think for many here the hobby is driving a 928 NOT building or fixing one , that differs from some other forums. Also the vast availabilty of inexpensive (a relative term) aftermarket parts lends itself to more modifications....and last but not least some of us are cheap bastards I have spent thousands of dollars on dogs ...real dogs the four legged ones medical bills , that one makes no sense at all ! But if you love that dog ...spend the money

Hi
There is a guy in the UK call Joe Farman who drags an early 928 with a 3 speed auto, and he swears that the 3 speed is BETTER than the 4 speed for drag racing...the reason is that the 4 speed auto like mine will take you past the line in THIRD as it changes into third at around 80 mph, while the 3 speed will take you past the line in SECOND.....saving a change and time etc....
As far as more power is concerned at little cost...Nitrous...add around 100 hp...easy on a 928 and drop your 1/4 time by at least a second..maybe 2...
All the best Brett

I don't like the smoothed out look of S4, so nah!
Here is the 0-60 / 1/4 Miles times :

However, there is a good lack of information as to the transmition.
But their times for the 77-78 match what I get for my 79 auto.
No idea why the 80+ seam to be slower. Heavier?

Long ago when I was running only 150 hp of Nitrous I ran a 3.9 0-60 on my G-Tech...for what its worth....
So YES Nitrous will help you "off the line".........

Here is a good summary of the engine/model types:
https://www.928gt.com/t-928engine.aspx
My car has headers-and a Y pipe. Seems plenty quick to me. Pulls well in all gears. I would love to upgrade to a M28-11 one day.

To the OP, the 4 speed auto is in my view the worst transmission you can get for the 16v 928s. The 32v cars are better suited to it as they have much more torque lower down (peak @ 3000rpm in the S4). As others have, said, the 3 spd is a really nice box for real world driving.
I used to have a 4 spd Auto S2 (310hp) and I hated that box, the gap between second and third was just huge and when it changed up the engine fell completely out of its power band.
My advice would be to get the car running "as factory" before splashing any cash on anything else. There are very few magic bullet solutions for extra hp, delete rear muffler? I have never seen this proved on a dyno run, ever.
Get the car running right and if you still feel it's too slow, change it for an "S" - 300hp, as quick in the real world as a stock S4 if you have the 5 speed.
Just my $0.02

But some 928 owners seem to be the type of people who see a really beautiful car in the classifieds, or on ebay, and the price is great. So they think they are getting this beautiful exotic car for $5000, or even less. But then they realize they are a bit underpowered off the line, and want to upgrade. But for people who were looking for a "budget exotic", they find out pretty fast that the 928 is not a car you can make fast for cheap.
My guess is that there are a percentage of 928 owners that fall into that "budget exotic" mindset. And they can't afford the mods that would make their car faster. Like rebuilding the engine into a stroker, or adding a supercharger. So for the people who can't afford to do that stuff, nitrous is a cheaper way to get the power up there. Obviously, the people who can afford to build engines from scratch, can afford a nice GT or GTS, will also be able to afford a supercharger kit, and it's no big deal. But there does seem to be some people who get into the 928 game without realizing the costs involved. And more often than not, those people are OB owners... People who can drop $20K for a really good s4 won't have an issue with spending more $ to go fast. But people who pick up a $2000 OB aren't going to have the same levels of disposable income...

I am not sure I agree with that last paragraph...
Although Nitrous CAN be a cheap power adder (under £700 for 100 hp)
There are also people like me who actually LIKE the 16 valve engine and my Nitrous system has cost me so far around £7000 !
For that money I could buy a very nice S4 in the UK and if I sold my S2 and added that money , I could probably get a Gts....
But my way of doing it has given me a faster car than a GTS.....
All the best Brett
