Some early '78 had two large external pumps, ROW's too. I can't recall when exactly it was changed to just one but it was quite quickly after production started.

Both of my 78's have one pump, but some had two. The reason I have heard was that those destined for hot climates required the extra volume to keep from vapor locking in stop and go traffic. I good replacement for the Bosch external and in tank pump is the Pierberg 6.5 bar external pump.
