HELP PLEASE!!! Swapping fuse panels
My sons 1980 US model auto has some electrical problems. For one with the interior fan is running with A/C on or not, The BACK of the fuse panel up close to the #16 fuse starts to omit smoke but does not blow the fuse. I have a GOOD fuse panel I could swap in out of a 1982 US auto. Does any one know if this is a plug and play sway????

Compared fuse panel relay charts and all the fuse locations match. All the relay locations match but some of the relay numbers do not.
Those relay numbers that do not match are:
VI window winder
X twin tone horns
XIV start relay
XVII A/C condenser fan
XXI fresh air blower
XXII defroster

Dean,
My first reaction is that this is not an easy swap so be carefull.
I am sure some of the electrical experts will chime in though.

It would be far easier to determine why your panel starts smoking and correct that problem rather then try to replace it with one from a car of a different year. One must remember there were subtle changes in the electrical systems for almost every year of production so switching to a panel from a different year may be more trouble then finding and correcting the problem. Replacing the entire panel is akin to tearing down a house because it has a bad light switch.

Its probably easier to fix whatever is wrong with your current panel than to adapt an 82 to work...
If the panel is smoking you may have a short somewhere - its possible its not even on the panel - which would mean even a new one may go the same way.
Take the panel out and investigate exactly what has fried - you need the wiring diagrams for this...
If its just the #16 fuse socket geting hot it may just be an issue of cleaning off the corrosion on the contacts - start here...
