Congrats. I bought a pretty decent '82 auto back in June and spent about $4k making her roadworthy. Still needs tires though!

Search on my user name and you'll eventually find some engine bay pics if you are wondering where things are supposed to go.

Okay, DUH, right there it is. I'll check it out. Thanks.

If that's your shark in your avatar picture, I'll trade you straight up.

Thanks!

Seems like most people on the board spend 4-10k on a OB 928 and put a few thousand into it the first year then have it?

lets see some pics of the inside and......more pics
That's the theory of a free car. If you pay a very small amount for the car then you have a lot more room to work within before you exceed the resale value of the car when it is then no longer a free car. One of my favorite things.

I can't imagine what I could take a picture of right now that would be worth seeing unless it was the discraceful condition of the passenger seat. Oh the horror!

Thanks.

Thanks, I'll go look. One nice thing about this car being neglected is that most everything appears to be where it's supposed to be. But I'm sure I'll eventually get to the point where I'm obsessing over details. I've already been collecting pictures of parts and engine bays. Who knows, I may have yours already.

Thanks.

Default An Update...

Well after many delays etc. etc. I'm finally making some progress of a sort.

I finished the oil pan gasket replacement. As expected, the new cork gasket that came with the car provided less than a perfect seal. It seems to weep at the back primarily. But at least I was right that the primary source of the leaking was the pan and not the rear main seal. It turns out the rms does leak but we're talking drips not the gusher I was getting before. So I decided to put that repair off for now so I could get the car back on the ground and out of the way (bad planning on my part for blocking the camper). I also replaced the rubber hoses of the transmission vacuum line (practically fell off in my hand) and installed a new oil presure sender unit along with a host of minor cleanup duties and wiring/connections cleanup and repair.

Next task is to pull an injector rail and test the injectors. I've come to the conclusion that they have to be the main problem. I've eliminated the CSV circuit as a problem. It appears to be working as it should. If there are anymore vacuum leaks I sure can't find them and the AFM flapper is moving quite substantially. The car should be getting fuel but appears that it isn't. The car will start on its own only when it is cold (CSV working) and even then dies as soon as the CSV fuel is used up. Once warmed up (using ether), the car will idle reasonably well but will still not accelerate well most of the time until you get it past about 2000 RPM. Then it sounds pretty decent but you've really got to coax it up to that point. I think the injectors are just so clogged that they're not delivering any fuel at all during startup and very little at lower RPMs. It certainly stands to reason as it appears that they are most likely the original injectors (remember car was neglected but only has 69,000 miles). Hoses look original and surprisingly not cracked. Zip ties on the injector wiring appear to be original. I suppose it's possible to replace the injectors without removing the zip ties but I don't know why anyone would bother. Anyway, I'm going to pull the left side rail and set up a rig to test the injectors. If I'm right, they should be pretty pitiful and I'll just buy a new set. It doesn't make sense to me to have these injectors cleaned since they're so old and most likely badly clogged. I may take a whack at cleaning them myself just to see if I can make a difference but we'll see.

It's nice to have the 928 back on the ground and I went ahead and drove it outside for a good washing. Now it's back inside waiting for me to get back on it again. It'll have to wait until next week cause this weekend I've got a reunion to go to and bourbon to drink.

Thanks for reading!

Jeff

you might try Witchhunter for injection cleaning fast turn around and reasonable price 154.00 for 8 plus shipping, do a search.
A lot of the things you have been fixing on your car are very similar to the problems I have found on my 84 Euro except that mine was caught on fire first by the PO due to a frozen fuel pump and using boat gas and a fresh battery.. I had to replace the fuel tank on mine as well as........... well you get the idea,

YIKES!

Thanks for the thoughts on cleaning guys. I usually just set up a rig and force various solvents through under regulated pressure. It never occured to me to try boiling them. Apparently, it's time to get out the camp stove.

Replying to myself again:

I'm wondering how waterproof these injectors are and how well they will respond to boiling if they're not being energized. I can see where this could work well with CIS injectors but is it appropriate for electrically fired injectors?

Mini update:

I bench tested the injectors and they were amazingly great. I put them back in and cleaned all of the injector connectors and checked a few for brittleness under the boots. They're nice and pliable.

I also cleaned and readjusted the idle switch before I gave up for the winter.

Thanks, I truly need the encouragement. While working on it today, I noticed that the front left head gasket is in fact leaking. Add that to the still weeping new pan gasket and the RMS. Oh joy!

The tail of the following post link will bring you up to speed with where things are at now that I've finallly gotten back into it. I've pretty much decided that the problem is at the ECU and injection. But as you'll read if you jump to the end of the following thread, I've made a new ugly discovery.

https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...t-start-2.html

I'm now going to make an extended pit stop (I know I just started working on it again after way too many months but hey, I'm depressed!) to watch F1 qualifying for Bahrain.

Thanks for participating.

Jeff
