The only way I know for sure is to obtain a Certificate of Authenticity from Porsche. They aren't cheap, and sometimes contain errors (my MSRP was way off). However, they do contain the engine and transmission serial numbers which can be matched up with the vehicle.

For just the engine and transmission codes, go to the 928 Specialists website: www.928gt.com Once there, go to the 928 Tips/Links > Tech/Specs > Engine Types chart. There is also a Transaxle Specs chart in the same area.
Rixter may know of some other ways. Perhaps he will see this thread and chime in.

They told me over the phone what options and engine number the car had from factory based on the VIN number, as well as what date the car left the factory. To get confirmation on paper, I had to pay them.
I believe all Porsche offices/dealers share the same database and can get this info?
