Default Unpredictable Engine Shutdown

Background: 1982 928 w/ AT

The car drives well, except that the engine shuts off while driving (unpredictably). Subsequently, the engine will not start for a period of time (15 min - 90 minues). Then, voila! The engine starts and away I go -- sometimes for 30 miles other times about a half a mile. She always starts cold.

I've been through the fuel system, dropped the tank, replaced the tank filter, fuel filter, new fuel pump. Installed a temporary fuel pressure gauge and there is good pressure (even after the engine stops).

I've replaced the coil and the ignition switch (really needed it). Immediately after an "episode", I hooked a timing light and determined spark on the leads (inductively).

I really love the way the car drives, I just can't trust it.

Any help is appreciated.

David

I failed to mention that I have also replaced the fuel pump relay.

If a relay, can you provide a list of the "usual suspects"? Is there a procedure to test the relays?

Thanks

I had some similar symptoms, and it turned out to be the (dreaded) green wire.

David,
Inspect all your vaccum hoses. Or better yet just replace all of them.
I had the same shut down issue and discovered the vaccum hose to the A/C idle motor had deteriated inside out, causing a vaccum leak when the hose became hot, sealing the vaccum leak when the hose cooled off.
