Default Strange Sunroof Problem. Please Help.

I took my sunroof out in order to lubricate everything. Today I was planning on re-installing but I am having an issue.
  • The sunroof motor will turn in the close direction but not the open direction
  • The Sunroof itself is now out of the car so it is not causing this by dragging or being stuck
  • I have disconnected the transmission from the sunroof motor and still have this problem
  • I have replaced the sunroof motor w/ one from another one of my cars and I have the same problem.
  • I have tested the plug to the sunroof motor and I get the same voltage in bith the open and close position on the switch

Any ideas?

bad sunroof switch IIRC you can swap it with a window switch and see if things are different OR you can take out the SS and clean it. To remove the switch remove the right console screws 2 and then the switch connection is in front of the back of the radio and then push up from under the switch to remove it from the console

Concur...bad switch. Push REALLY hard on it in the direction it is not responding...if it breaks who cares it is broken anyway, it may just surprise you.

I have a window switch that is that way. The new ones you can get SUCK! You have to just about stand on it to make the close position contact close and work, but when you do that it works just right a light touch and you think it is broken though.

Good luck!

Please help me to understand your line of thinking on this. As stated in my first post, I tested the plug at the sunroof motor. I am getting the same voltage when I push the switch to close as I am when I push it to open. How could it be the switch? The voltage is being sent to the motor. I will try to swap it out but it doesn't make sense to me.

Anyone else?

Depends upon how you are testing the voltage...

If you are checking for 12 vdc to ground, you are ignoring the ground side of the circuit. the switch reverses the polarity of the power and ground - that is, you must have +12 vdc on one wire, and ground on the other wire. The +12 vdc and ground are reversed to close, but both must be present.

Test only the plug, not to a body ground, in other words.

Yes, I put each one of the leads on the multimeter to one of the pins in the plug.

And does the power/ground reverse? That is, does the power go from +12 vdc to -12 vdc?

Well kiss my grits!!! It was the switch. Weird. Thanks fella's.

Now, someone explain HOW it was the switch.

I was getting voltage in both directions as you ask Wally. I took the motor off and ran it in both directions to verify that the motor was good. It was. I then swapped the switch w/ the window switch and the motor worked in both directions. I took the sunroof switch apart and cleaned the contacts and now it is working properly.

Now I have another problem. I can't get the sunroof adjusted properly. It sticks about halfway and needs help to fully open or close. I also scratched my new paint thanks to the misadjustment.

if you really wanted to just test the sunroof motor or any other motor for that matter simply run 2 jumper wires from the battery to the motor reversing the wires will make the motor run in the opposite direction. This will work for the fuel pump, window motors and sunroof

its a good idea to tape a piece of magazine clear plastic to the outside of the sunroor when refitting it so you dont scratch the new paint or original paint run some dry erase markers on the plastic to verify the roof wont hit the sunroof portion. use blue tape so you damage the paint

I'm having trouble getting the back of the sunroof to come up high enough to seal. I have the adjustment bolts on the gates as high as I can get them. Is there some other adjustment for the rear height that I'm missing?

Thanks

Yes I have been reading it but it still won't adjust high enough in the rear to make a good seal. I will post some pics tomorrow.

Does the guide pin go inside of, or ride on top of the track? When I say guide pin I am refering to the small 5mm diameter screw that has a slotted head and is smooth on the end so it can be used for alignment without buggering up the threads. I had it inside the track but couldn't get the back to adjust high enough. It looks like if I put it on top of the track it will give me just enough height to seal at the back.
