There's a proceedure in the WSM that entails using a rod to correctly line up the switch on the side of the 'box for correct alignment. Then slip off the cable ball joint at the box (I remember a circlip), select a known gear on ther box, select the same on the lever in the cabin, then adjust the length of the cable at the box end so that the ball will just slip onto the gearbox selector arm.
Then everything should work....

Hi John, I looked in the WSM and wasn't sure I had the correct section so I opted to leave it alone! I had a good look under the car earlier and found the MB part that you mentioned in one of your previous posts. Looks like the switch is only fixed at 2 points? To be honest I don't really fancy struggling under the car again by myself so I think i'll wait till after the TIPEC meet and drop into the garage for them to have a look.

The correct pages in the manual are 37-107 to 111. in Volume 3 WSM. The 4mm diameter rod is inserted with the gearbox in neutral. There are two securing bolts for the switch to the gearbox casting.
