1987 S4 Fuel pump whine - normal? first post, first 928
I just bought a 87 S4 in great shape with 46K miles. I searched "fuel pump whine/noise" without learning much.
When the car is running......A noticeable "whine" comes from the rear of the car. I need to replace the fuel filter and will do that, but is this noise an indication the pump is on its way out? Might I clean the screen in the tank. Can this be done with the tank in the car? Thanks, and by the way I thought the shark fest at Grandfathers was excellent. Nice group of people.

A little " whine" is OK, sometimes changing the Fuel filter will help.
If it's real loud. Then you may want a new pump.
I just changed my fuel pump at 138000 miles and now it's dead silent.

Mine has been whining on and off now for 8 years.
Most of the time it's quiet, but every once in a while it likes to speak up and be heard.

Normally the louder the whine the closer you are to the pump failing.
You can clean/change the screen with the tank in place. Need to drain it of course.
New pump is $159.95 and a new screen is $47.99. You will also need some crush washers and a new filter would be worthwhile at $18.86.
The new screen comes with a tank gasket. If you want to reuse the existing screen you will also need a new gasket.

DO NOT remove the screen from the bottom of the tank it screws into a treaded ring that is molded into the tank. IF the treads are corroded or has been overtightend ( great big nut ,big wrench) when you attempt to unsrew it YOU WILL BE SCREWED ! The insert ring will spin and the gas tank is RUINED !!!! This is one reason we sell all the used fuel tanks we get. You can see the screen from above by removing the sending unit with the tank in the car ( no fuel) it is a rather coarse screen and only keeps big chunks from being sucked into the pump.

After replacement (including all rubber pieces) the noise is gone. Cost was about $250. BTW, before you do any of this, siphon out your gas tank after removing the screw-in cover under rear deck carpeting. Keeps you from becoming flammable!
