Default Help in Vegas (anyone have a Kempf tool?)

Hi guys,

About halfway on my trip from the Bay Area to Vegas I got a Timing Belt Tension warning light that recurred after shutting the car down and restarting. The belt is a year/12k miles old and the tension was checked at 1500 miles but not since then. I was able to get the left cover off and inspect the belt and it looked good and the sensor wire was in place. After speaking with Bill Ball on the phone I put what I think was 2 flats of additional tension (hard to tell because of the limited space/no visibility in there.) The warning light came on again after about 20 miles or so, I pulled over and added 2 more flats of tension, this time the light stayed off for the rest of my trip into Vegas. I'll be here for at least 10 days for the World Series of Poker (hopefully a lot longer) and I'd like to check the tension before I head back to the Bay Area to make sure I didn't take it too far. I'm staying with a friend just north of Summerlin and am hoping there's someone nearby with a Kempf tool available to lend a hand.

Ive got the tool but im currently 2000 miles away from it. I should be back in Vegas Tuesday morning. I live in Summerlin so i should be close to where you are. You know how to check the tension and all that stuff? Have tools handy?

I'm ashamed to say I have the Kempf tool at home but have not used it yet. I have a set of travel sockets and some other basic tools with me which I'm assuming are enough to do this job. The thought occurred to me to include the Kempf tool with the rest of my travel tools but for some reason I never got around to doing it. Lesson learned.

I'm no expert on this topic but I would very carefully examine the position of the belt on the camshaft sprockets. Having to retension a built with only those miles on it is odd and I wonder if the tensioner shoulder bolt is ok, especially after retensioning it twice. If the belt is riding out towards the front of the sprocket you may have a problem there. More experienced heads can correct this advice if I'm wrong. Good luck!

It's good advice and worth a look. The joy of having some knowledgeable ownrs there in LV is that you can have another set of eyes looking at the car while you do. The pass side cover comes off for the adjustment, so you can see a lot of stuff like how the belt tracks on the tensioner roller.

gotta agree with Bob............if you already own the tool have an experienced 928 owner come over for a frosty or 2 and supervise.

Beats doing it the solo hard way.
