FWIW
Pattycakes the 82' Wunder-Weissach does the same, so does the 88 Ford F-150 :<)
As to the Air Sensor aka Air Flow Meter -81 '84'- there should be a little tension -not much-.
However, since you have the air box upper/lower off, pull the electrical connector (pass side) and pull that puppy off.
While the throat may be relatively clean
the "gate/flapper/ barn door" is probably grunged-up as well as reachable internal openings. Get some canned air, brake cleaner, WD-40, toothbrush, Q-tips/long swabs and a few old white socks ... and get after it! Cleans up really well in about 15 minutes. Caution around the hard plastic connector. Watch for flying debris (eyeballs) do a good wipe down, clean those elec. connector lines too (engine side).
You should notice a difference (before and after).
BTW If you haven't change plugs in a decade or two,
you will notice how easy the rear ones are to access with the
AFM out of the way.
Clean/inspect electricals/vac lines, reachable portion of the engine valley ....anything you can NOW REACH .
P.S.
When you pull the AFM ...pull it out a little then push it back in, get a feel for it. Sort of a rubber sleeve no clamp. Clean the reciever -rubber connector- .
