Head liner/sunroof question

Well I did attatch the headliner and rear interior qtrs this week, and all was well for a road trip. I drove about 90 miles up to Knoxville for lunch with the inlaws (my wife and son were there for the holiday weekend). I cut out right after lunch and went over to Dean Fullers house to check out his 928 collection. You know it will be a good day when directions to anywhere finish with " Hang a left and look for the 928's". Long story short- Sunroof froze- no transmission and the roof wont budge. I had been hesitant to use anything to pry with, but after Dean and I ,one on each side, standing on door jambs, and pulling with all of our might, were able to get about a half inch of clearance , we broke out the pry tools. We started with a small puddy knife with a shop rag wrapped around it. That didnt seem too bad.......then I look up and Dean has a crow bar in his hand. "surely we can get it open with this". Well we did (thanks Dean) and what we found was amazing (to me). The tracks were coated with what was once a lubricant of some type but now looked and felt like friction tape. Everything seemed complete with no loose parts and nothing obvious to restrict the movement except the 25 year old lubricant. My plans are to pull everything out and do a complete rehab. I already have a new motor, new transmission (thanks AL-shark) and a switch that seems like new and engages the motor/transmission. I will try to post pics as I go.

You really never needed to pull your interior panel .... there is nothing covered by it that helps pull the sunroof. As to the other uestion, rear quarters do not come out to pull headliner. This is a frustrating job IMHO .... The roof liner trim always breaks ... I've removed it successfully, but it is very difficult, and older ones simply fall apart.

Congrats Brian. Mystery solved!
Although, I cringed a little when I read:
From your description of that 25 year old lubricant, I wonder if a PO used a something like graphited lock fluid? I've seen that stuff dry out and cake up.
At least now you can fix it up properly.
Enjoy your new sunroof!

heyjeffm,
I know this is a VERY old thread but is helping me through my removal of the headliner.
Here is my question. Do i have have to remove the sunroof leather piece to remove the head liner?
I am having problems getting the the back bunch of screws due to the clearance. The front set of screws that hold the wind deflector was a piece of cake but the black goe is horrible.
To remove the head liner, do i have to remove the front wind deflector, i would assume not....
I really do not want to remove the steel portion of the sunroof , i just want to remove the leather parts.
Any help for ... i am sure its Mr. Obvious... LOL THANK YOU

You need to remove all the hardware from the top of the roof looking in, that sits on top of the leather/vinyl holding it down around the sunroof aperture. Then carefully ... wait let me say it again CAREFULLY pry the leather/vinyl of the sunroof surround piece away from the paint (it is glued in-place).

Ok..i understand what you are talking about. Well i decided to cut a straight line with a razor around the sunroof outside edge. I can glue the outside parameter and possible put a rubber or plastic holding edge. What a pain the but. I was surprised how much hardware was holding the head liner. The black glue is just a mess....
Now its time for the rear hatch. Any specific details i need to be aware about?

Just following this discussion ... is it true that the headliner is glued to the underside of the roof all around the sunroof opening? How wide an area is glued, just the first inch or two or more than that?
I did see another thread where Tony C. posed a photo of the underside of his headliner and I didn't see anything that looked like a glue or sealer adjacent to the sunroof opening.
I may be taking mine down one day so hoping to be prepared when the time comes.

Yes, its about an inch all the way around the sunroof. Make sure you were gloves because the black goe is horrible to work with. As i had said, i gave up and just made a cut all the way around the sunroof. I really do not think its going to make much difference due to the ammount of hardeware (screws) that is mounted on the headliner.
I guess Porsche wanted to make sure the headliner would not sag. If mine drops due to my decision, i will just mount a few black screw and maybe a black cap if needed.
Good luck
