Opinions on new paint...Son wants something different.
My yongest son wants to repaint his 1980. Its a solid car but the Black Metallic is badly faded on the roof and back lid. I'm trying to talk him out of changing the color because mainly the extra work in painting the jambs and sills. Its not a show car and its his every day driver. The original color is Black Metallic. My thoughts where maybe a Black Metallic repaint with a large silver stripe ( match the wheels ) outlined in a thin red strip from front, over roof and down the back. ( Reminiscent of the 1978 Corvette pace car ) First pic is his car at present...the second pic was a pic I pulled off EBay awhile ago....thinking along these lines. Whats really odd is the Black Metallic is no where close to real black...its more of a really dark graphite color.
Anyways looking for ideas for him. Trying to keep the paint job at a reasonable cost for him to handle.
So...adding a large stripe??? Total color change??? A simple repaint ( he dosen't like the color but I think its just hard for him to visualize it in nice shape paint wise.)

I'm not a fan of two-tone or multi-tone 928's - the lines of the car are what defines its beauty imho, and multi-colors distract from that from my vantage point. I've never cared for that look on the vette either. I agree to talk him into going back to black.

I agree...I have never been a fan of custom paint myself...but this is a 22 year old guy that has his own car and doesn't like the color now. I tend to think if he saw a NICE BLACK METALLIC paint job he may feel differently. I can't find one though....anybody???

I would agree with the others that single color stock is the way to go.
However, I have three teenage sons, so I can somewhat understand your dilemma!!! Just point him in the right direction and hope for the best!

I changed the color on my black '84 at my son's urging. It was the BIGGEST MISTAKE I ever made on the car (And I made a bunch of mistakes on that one). A royal PITA to do that on these cars. I have changed colors before on cars and it not be that big a deal. Black Metallic looks great when it's fresh. Use all your powers of persuasion on your son to keep from changing the color. Good Luck

I REALLY like the Porsche black metallic. I agree with keeping the color the same and then adding a vinyl stripe or some other "wrap" if he wants even...that way going back to stock at some point will be VERY EASY and neat!
I saw a 599 wrapped in chrome! VERY COOL! Makes me think that if you ever need/want to repaint a car that would be the best and easiest way to do it! Of course it does not cover the jambs, but you can't have everything.
A GOOD full on color change will cost at least $5k I would think. Painting jambs is NOT fun and expensive. Frankly you need to take all the windows out, all the trim off the car, all the seals, and then doors, hood, hatch, and anything else you can get off! YUCK!

Trying to do a decent color change , jambing it all etc. will cost twice as much and make the car worth half as much when done not that that should be the only basis for the decision. Does point out the problem with buying a car that you do not LIKE !!

2004 atlas gray metalic is a great color...not black and not gray..just go to your local p dealer and walk the show room and lot. they should also have color samples on arched boards so you can get a good idea of the metalic affect.
