Default Lifter Problems

I checked my valve lifters after SITM and found 8 that are suspect of being collapsed. I have them soaking in varsol, however they are not responding with any spring movement. I checked threads and found out I need to preload the lifters with oil and found the bad lifters. Does any one have 8 used lifters they may want to part with ( early 86 auto)? I am communiting from Virginia to Pittsburg Pa. for work these days so it is going to be difficult to finish the 10 year labor of love.

Thanks,

Bill

How do you pre-load and check them?

Bill,

I have used lifters from a 1987 S4, but I don't know if they are the same as an '86. I know that all my lifters were not bad, but in the frustration of trying to sort out and test each one, I just bought all new ones. (38$ ea. X 32)

It ended up that I had 2 bent valves. The engine was very clean and the few lifters I took apart were not cloged or dirty in any way. There was no varnish build up on any kind.

The ones I have do pump up and stay hard, when you drain out the oil they are springy...

I have about 25 untouched lifters available.

If you are interested I would sell 8 for $80.00 and throw in a couple extra free to play with.

See this thread it might help. Good luck

Big Dave, I understood that prior to installing the lifters in the heads (only after I had finished installing the cams in the 1-4 head) that oil had to be in them, soaking or injecting them some how with oil. When I was trying to clean and check the springs I found 8 to be "immovable" no movement when I pressed down on them. So I am getting the impression the springs are collapsed. All the other ones have spring action when I press down on them. I am going to re read the threads and see if I am doing something wrong.

Dave, I'll pm later.

Thanks guys.

Bill

Thanks,

Bill
