Sometimes I have to shoot the gap in between traffic .There is evidence of the 82' ripping short bursts on order to do so .

My 84 with a manual and 285s on the rear will, but you have to try pretty hard.

The 83-84 4 speed auto trans has a lower low gear therefore more torque multiplication and the ability to exceed the traction of the tires ,the extra displacement 4.7 is a plus as well. The 50/50 weight disribution plants the rear tires much better than a USA "muscle car" with 60-70 % of it's weight on the FRONT wheels. The 5 speed cars have a low first gear AND the ability to rev the engine BEFORE releasing the clutch therebye storing a lot of energy as well as getting the engine up to an RPM where it makes more power. A quick release breaks loose the tire and once spinning the tire has FAR LESS TRACTION so it keeps spinning (think drifting) ....much noise and smoke but very little forward motion

skeptic here - our Blue Car couldn't chirp off the line if it's life depended on it. Runs like a banshee above 3800rpm, but notta off the line.

My experience: Driven two 81's and '82 and our'80 = stock with 3sp auto can not spin an open diff off the line. Add H2O, slight right turn pitch, gravel or brake stand, okay, but not straight-up floor mash. There's just too much gear for 219hp/3400lbs to overcome.

Mine won't either. I do get a chirp on the 1-2 shift when I'm really getting on her, but nothing off the line.

Mine is a bone stock 79 Euro.

Little off topic, but I recieved a Magazine review of the "new" S4 from 1987 as a recent fathers day gift. Their comment was that with the auto the car would barely "chirp the tires". I know its not an OB but my S4 does not even leave black marks every time. Sometimes I floor it and I just move on out. Other times I floor it and I leave a stripe "singular, no LSD" for the next 40 ft.

I have a 5-speed so not in your question.
But with the price of fuel, tires, and wear and tear on the car. I wouldn't want to sit and roast tires away. As Jim said it's no american piece of s#%t and is a touring car so not being able to roast the tires is a trade off, for blowing by them when they are red lined at 85mph.
If you want to burn tires you can find a cheap camaro or the like that will burn through tires all day.

My '85 has an Xpipe, no cats & is chipped. Never have spun the tires. Gotten on it enough times from a stop, but always in second, without the special downshift to first trick. Currently its mainly cause I have monster 295s in the rear that hold on to everything. Previous to those it had 255s & I probably have always kept in the back of my mind the thought(fears) of breaking something on my 20+ yr old shark.

I was curious 'bout this very thing. Thanks for the thread. Mine is very stock, and will only do it sometimes. Mostly turning at a stop light and/or with some lubrication on the ground (sand, water, etc.). It will almost always chirp second if I stay on it. I agree it might be asking alot of an old car, so I don't do it often, but c'mon......IT'S A PORSCHE FOR GOODNESS SAKE!!

Mine would burn them some of the time, and not others. It really seemed to depend a lot of the temperature. Southern California is often hot, and on a hot day, it would rarely burn rubber. But on a cold night, it would light them up ok. I think that may be the reason some of you in Seattle, or the Northeast, are experiencing more tire burn. The other factor is tires and wheels. When I had stock sized wheels, and crappy tires, they burned out pretty nicely. But when I got wider wheels, and better tires, it would not burn out nearly as much. More often just a chirp, and then hard acceleration. So if you want to burn out, get narrow wheels, crappy tires, and go out there on a cold night! Haha!

Mine too shifts hard through the gears. Almost a shift kit feel on a "Camero". Like you guys said it won't burn em if it's life depended on it. Get the RPM's up to the sweet spot and it screams. As far as driving it like a wuss or worrying about the age on it. POOP!! I drive it hard, Take care of it, and love every minute in the SHARK. Heck I slammed it so hard in to a corner the other day I broke the center console door hinge from bracing myself on it during the turn. If we can't drive these super cheap super cars like we stole em what car can you do it with. In fact the price of these cars is so low a lot of Camero's cost more. Sad isn't it?

Try this method......

Start car.

Put in neutral.

Floor accelerator.

Shift to Drive….

Sounds like a great plan. Problem is I wouldn't be able to hear the tires burning out over the sound of the transmission exploding
