Well, he did insist on the q-tip paint application method, so I don't know what all the griping is about.

No really, great thread. I've been reading about some really spendy paint jobs and I figured I'd never have my 928 resprayed, but if I did the disassebly and reassembly myself, it sounds much more affordable.

Now doing all of that work is another matter, but just from a spend perspective, its a much brighter picture.

You also need to factor in about $2k in rubber and trim pieces, if you want to do this right.

But $25k - wow, I would not even expect that from Porsche Classic for a factory repaint! Well, maybe with the weak Dollar and shipping back and forth...

Come on out to West Texas during the breezy season and I can get you an
exterior only paint removal to bare metal relatively cheap :<).
That should help with the high man-hour cost.
Might need new glass though as the Vendor -Mama Nature- is rather indescriminate and
works with a broad brush.
A comment on the $25,000 ... go to SITM, offer $25K for a sHARk and then count the
number of bodies run over in the stampede to sell :<)
You can get a fabulous 928 including a fair Paul Champagne make over for that kind of loot.

Hammer, Wow, your paint job looks GREAT! (insert "green-with-envy" smiley face here!!!)
You went way beyond what I'm trying to accomplish. Changing colors is a BIG job, to do it right. And yours looks like it's been done right!! I'm just trying to match up with the original.

Nicole, Yup, thanks I'm aware of the rubber and trim bits and I've already begun purchasing the needed replacements. But the painter won't have to deal with any of that. The disassembly work is done, and after painting I'll handle putting it all back together. The painter will just need to concentrate on the painting, and that spot of rust.

By doing the disassembly and reassembly myself, I feel I'm not only saving a lot of labor expense, but I've also saved a lot of trim pieces that might otherwise have been damaged by any careless shop hands.

And I've learned a whole lot about my 928 in the process. With a whole lot of help from the knowledge and experience found here on Rennlist!

I've meet with another painter whose price was $5k, which still seems kinda high to me considering, but maybe that's inline for this area, I don't know. So I'll keep asking around. It just seems like such a crap shoot at the moment.

John S., Ha! That's a thought, Mother Nature's free sand blasting! Hmm, maybe not!! And let's not go causing any SITM stampedes either!!!

I think the numbers quoted here are pretty good - 10K (or even slightly more) for a full blown tear-down glass-out - every nook and cranny prepped and painted to factory quality (or better) and then re-assembled with new seals as required, wet sanded, buffed and detailed.

With you doing all the dis-assembly (and I mean ALL the disassembly so they don't have to mask and remask at every stage) and you doing the re-assembly (risky- on a 928) with you supplying all the seals/supplies (paint shop only providing solvents, primer, base, clear, sanding, prep, painting, and polishing labor) I would think for a really good job (as above), you'd still be looking 3-6K depending on color and how **** you want the finished job to look.

Lastly, you could do a very respectable job -no color swap, minimal jamb work , minimal tear down and blocking only the substrate for 2-3K if you do your homework and shop around. Paint and chemicals has gone through the roof but 25k is just being a crack hound.
