Default Why do bolts have section cut out?

I'm installing new hood release on RHD car.

The cable runs under the panel with the two multiway connectors shown in first photo, which is bolted to front of engine compartment (btw what does this panel do?)

The bolts at each end have a 90 degree chunk cut out. Just wondered why as I'm replacing them with new, regular bolts. I notice that the bolt which holds my ground strap down in the hatch has a similar cut-out, which has always puzzled me too.

What is the purpose of these cut-outs?

Thanks

The two connectors connect to the ignition control unit. One /4 cylinders. If one goes bad you will be running on 4 cylinders.

That happened to me and I just replaced the chip with a used one.

Don't know why the bolts are cut?

That looks like a self tapping bolt. The cutout is for the filings to have a place to collect and drop out.

Sorry I can't help with anything else.

It's just to right of the lower latch Bert (looking down facing front of car).

Above the words "bolt here" you can just make out the end of the hood release cable, before it disappears into hole.

Strange if yours is different as we have same model and year?

Sorry, having a senior moment, you've taken the cover off thats why i didn't recognise it (+ a bottle of quality red....). Definately a self cleaning threaded bolt. I've usually see them in use where threads are contaminated with paint overspray.

the panel is for the electronic ignition they are called the igniters. The bolt cut out is called a self tapping screw but it is usually put into a threaded hole the notch as stated before is so the metal shavings can fall out if the bolt has to cut any new threads

I vote for the use on previously threaded holes which get painted...the notch cuts the paint .
