Default What's a fair value?

As many of you know, I've listed my 87 'S4 here for sale on and off over the past year.

On the original posting, I think I racked up some 2,000 views, posted a video, but not one offer or request to test drive...nada.

No, my A/C is not working and the odometer stopped clicking in Feb, but despite that - it seems in my humble opinion, to be as nice as many I've seen sell on e-bay or acquired here.

The TB, waterpump, and radiator were all changed in 2002 by previous owner. I've maintained the fluids and filters since I acquired her in '03, and replaced the ignition wires and plugs, added new tires last May with an alignment.

So, I'm curious - what does the community of owners think a car like mine is worth.

Mike

To a lot of people, 6 years since the last timing belt job means it's due again.

Hacker is right, if I bought the car the T Belt would have to be done ASAP along with the AC.

I know reality is a bit harsh, but before I bent my valves I tried to sell mine (1987 with 80,000miles) and the best offer I had was $8500.00 and that deal fell through. (AC works and advertised as above average and the pic's looked great) When I put it up for sale I hoped I would get 10k. Never happened.

It really just depends on how long you want to hold out until you run across a buyer willing to pay your price. I know on a Dodge Viper I sold a few months back I took about 7K less than I ever thought I would consider, but just needed to move the car.

Good luck

I love that car. Unfortunately, I put that money+ into this 84.

No data, but its starting to feel to me like the 928 market in this general area, Williamsburg, Richmond, on through Roanoke and Winston Salem is particularly underdeveloped --- meaning far fewer cars and fewer enthusiasts --- than we are reading about in parts of Florida, Texas, California and Colorado. Some places in those states have lots of cars, other cities seemingly zero. Washington and Philly seem fairly developed, though. What do you think?

If the market never developed very far, then the economic factors wouldn't need to shift much to wipe out the already limited interest. Could it be location, location, location in the case of your car?

If you decide to attack the timing belt, BTW, would be glad to help.

AC and odometer are also pretty big negatives, AC cause its damn hot inside a dark 928 down here and odometer from a validation perspective.

I think it's worth above $10K. It will need a tb/wp. Where are you advertising it? The interior looks very good.

When I see a car that the seller says "needs X Y Z" it makes me wonder what else it needs. Not saying you are not being forthcoming, but it puts the doubt out there to a buyer subconciously. Also, usually a list of items that need to be fixed right off the bat, especially pricey ones, is a deal killer for many people. After plunking down $10k or so they want a car they can hop in and drive, not spend another few grand to get right ... all imho of course. good luck with the sale!

I think trying to sell a 928 on Rennlist is one of the worst places to try. Just based upon my observations over the years, many members here are very...umm...frugal. This board can really tear apart a car that is for sale. Happens all the time. Look at all of the posts scrutizing cars for sale on places like ebay and craigslist. Then we're the first ones to complain about deflated values of our cars.

I'm convinced that one would never get the best price for a car here unless it was in pristine condition. Try advertising on cars.com, autotrader, etc. Look for less informed buyers.

Another vote here for +$10k.

Knowing nothing about the car other than the pics posted here, and assuming the two issues mentioned were functioning, I'd expect that car to be in the $13k - $15k range.

Whack a couple of grand off for A/C repair, and you're still north of $10k easily.

I'm with OrionKhan: take your effort to sell elsewhere, where they don't already have 928s! I'd probably list it at $13k with an eye towards negotiating a quick sale.

Good luck.

The car market is VERY tough right now with the economy down & oil prices up.

Sell it in 2 weeks $7-8k
1-2 months $8k-$9k
10k+ 6+ months

I hope you are right directionally.

Mike, your sure your family isn't ready to step directily into a Moomba Outback ski boat? Its value is suffering as well and my family seems to be outgrowing it. Skis/wakeboard included.

I am sure you tried to sell local. Trying to sell a Pcar here especially a 928, well thats like trying to sell some some cryons to crayola. I voted 7500-9500

to maximize sale potential you should at least do the tb/wp, many buyers are willing to deal with the usual broken odo and inop ac, but adding the tb/wp on top of the rest doesn't help
if you want, get the parts and come down here 1 weekend and we'll knock it out
