Can I remove this permanently? I don't know what you call it but I know it has something to do with a mileage counter. FYI, I am emissions exempt in my state.

If you ever plan on selling the car you may want to leave it. That way if the next owner is in a smog state he can get it registered. When I bought mine the OXS light didn't work and the smog guy failed it.... luckily I remembered the counter location and was able to plug it in. I found out why it was unplugged as it made a god awful grinding noise.

What does it "count" exactly? O2 sensors don't have any moving parts??!

It counts miles and at 60,000 turns on the light. Button resets it : edit and at 30,000 according to Ken

It counts speedometer pulses. Every 30K miles (48K km), it turns on the [OXS] light, until the reset button on the counter is pushed.

Factory deleted in '84(?).
