Where do I find the fuel damper diaphragm? I've done a cursory look over the car and I don't smell any gas under the hood. No smell from the front passenger wheel well that might implicate the y-tube and carbon filter, the rear hatch could close a little tighter but the smell in the car is more of gas than exhaust, there was an after market amplifier and subwoofer installed on the rear hatch (passenger side)--I pulled that off this morning and it looks like about six screws have penetrated the sheet metal--mostly just behind the rear seat on the passenger side--it doesn't look like this is good to be easy to look at without liftbars which I don't have yet so my next move was to look for the fuel damper diaphragm...
Thanks,
Dan

There's 2 fuel dampers and 1 fuel regulator in the system as well as several rubber hoses which if original should be replaced.
The fuel line runs along the passenger side inner fender (LH drive cars), over the passenger engine valve cover to the damper at the front of the engine where the fuel then flows into the fuel rails to the back of the engine. The 2nd fuel damper is attached to the drivers side fuel rail at the rear and the regulator attached to the passenger fuel rail, again at the rear. The rear damper has the 'U' shaped rubber hose attached to the regulator and the regulator has the return hose attached to it toward the fuel cooler and return.
Here's the pic:
Hose part numbers are in blue.
1 - Fuel pump
2 - Fuel filter
3 - Fuel line
4 - Distributor-type fuel injection tubes
5 - Injectors
A - Throttle housing
B - Idle speed actuator
C - Intake jet pump
D - Pressure damper
E - Pressure regulator
F - Vacuum valve
G - Electric tank breather valve
H - Oil filler neck
I - Secondary-air valve
K - Vacuum-operated switch valve (tune-intake flap)
L - Vacuum unit (tune-intake flap)
a - from fuel tank
b - to fuel tank
c - from activated charcoal cannister
d - from vacuum reservoir
e - to automatic transmission
(from John Pirtles excellent site)

Welcome. I agree that you should go to SITM. You are so close that it would be a sin to miss it. It will help you to appreciate and enjoy your car more.

the fuel tasnk is positioned on the passenger side of the rear hatch area so it is possibble that the tank now has a hole in it from the errant stereo upgrade

P.S. What's the white plastic box under the right rear passenger side rail with a black hose running foreward and backward from it--is that part of the vapor collection system?

I'm just order the PET CDs this week from Jim but I'll check them out when they arrive.
By the way, since I'm new to the forum I have an etiquette question. I know it's common courtesy to give follow-up and let people know how things worked out but it may take weeks before the problem is solved so do I do that in this thread? Will anyone still be watching this thread weeks from now? Is there a better way?
Thanks,
Dan

Hello Manfred,
I had a bad experience where my brand new VW Jetta 2002 burned to ashes after a small leak develloped at the gas tank pickup line. Eventhough I was driving at highway speed, the vapors managed to ignite in contact with the exhaust system.
My advice: don't mess with that problem. It gets pretty hot under 928 compared to a VW.
Regards.

Welcome to the forums. When my injector hoses started leaking I started smelling gas in the car. Check the motor good. I also have oil burning right now on the motor and I get that through the vent when I have them open.
