I think this is a good idea, but i dont have a mig or any way to weld it.

But i think someone mentioned for other stuck allen bolts to JB Weld the bit into the screw. Ive never used JB Weld so cant comment on its holding strength. But could this work? I know i would damage the bit by doing this but a new one is $6 so i could just chaulk it up as an expense.

This calls for a hammer and chisel do not worry about damaging the bolt or the threaded nut plate , we have both.

Thanks Jim,

Yeah its nice that the threaded portion is replaceable should damage occur. I actually have a few extra bolts now.

I guess i just dont know the hammer and chisel technique.

What am i going for with the hammer and chisel? Am i trying to break the head of the bolt off? Or am i just trying to break the thing free where i can then still used the stripped head to unbolt it once its broken loose. I guess i just dont understand what the goal of the hammer and chisel is, complete removal in one fell swoop, or just enough to break it loose and break the threaded bond ?

Default Bolts

Maybe they are talking more of using like a ***** punch and hammer to drive the little point on the punch into the head.Another words in you drive it into the right side to drive the screw counterclokwise it may start to loosen it.Its a punch with very small point on the end.Its harder than the bolt and will drive a small indentation into the side of the head which may cause the bolt to finally break loose. If doing any work like that make sure you have somekind of good safety glasses on!I did look at the front allen bolt it is tight area.
A mig weld may do it,if you could drive the car to a shop that does good welding. Its not like stick welding just need to tack the bit into it.
1st try the ***** punch to see if you can get it moving.
Try picking up a good punch and drive it into the side of the head to try to turn it in the direction to loosen it.If it moves and is hard to get out yet,do it to the opposite side to tighten alittle and work it back and forth. Also if it does break loose just alittle then maybe you can get alittle liquid wrench penatrating oil into the threads.Let it sit some then work it back and forth again with the punch.

Ryan,I know so many ideas but what will work,ou have to attack it different ways one will work better than another. When someone else might of metioned hacksaw ...Yes you cant get in there but what about just taking the the hack saw blade out of the saw holder just by itelf. You could slowly push on the blade, using the blade by itelf and make a slot(like a screwdriver slot) into the head on top.It will take some time but the screws are kind of soft it may not be too bad to do.Once you make that slot into the head then, get a small screw driver bit that is for maybe a little 1/4 inch drive racket wrench and get in there with that.
Been in the tool and die trade for years and there is always a way, just have to try some and if one fails step back think what else will work and go at it again.

You use the chisel to cut into the head off center , then use that notch angling the chisel to unscrew the bolt. Try doing it on the workbench until you get the hang of it. It is standard practice on VW transmissions to get off the big pinion nut . They pound them off and pound them back on. We see that on 928 boxes from time to time

This is where the term 'pinionated' cames from. A 'hard nut to crack' is another popular colloquialism. "Don't know which way to turn" and "get a bigger hammer" are negative derivitives.

Well Thanks again Jim B

I bought a small chisel and tapped away. (Wish i had a bigger hammer) but after a few minutes and a bunch of couges in the bolt head it broke its hold.

I then put the allen socket into the hole, gave it a nice tap with the hammer to seat it and then ratcheted away and now both the 2 stuck/stubborn bolts are out and the seats are out aswell.

Thanks again.

All in all the chisel was a very quick and cheap way to do this. Chisel cost me $4 from home depot and in the end was really was pretty easy.

THANKS AGAIN!

Ryan you got lucky. In the worst case you split the whole bolt head as best you can to weaken it (dremmel/hacksaw) then with a big pointed cold chisel and a lump hammer - you tear the bolt head clean off - it isn't pretty - but it works and doesn't do any real damage - the plate underneath survives fine - the bolt is no more.. but the thread remnants usually screw out easily with vice grips..
