Default steering rack setup

Thats correct....I'm replacing the steering rack as the last part of a MM/OPG upgrade. What do I need to pay attention to as part of connecting the new complete tie rods to the new steering rack? Do the tie rods just screw in "good and tight"? or is there more to it?

That's some real torque. Is there an obvious place in which to counter hold on the rack while turning off the tie rods from the old unit? I assume Jim, that you do not want the old core returned with tie rods on it?

I have the same question about the proper counter hold for the new rack and new tie rods....

OK....it almost seems like I should install the new tie rods onto the "new rack" by first installing the rack, using the 928 cross member as a counter hold and then installing and torqueing the tie rods onto the secured rack....no?

But then how to remove the old tie rods from the old core before returning the core.

Mike, there is a set of flats on the shaft that you can counterhold with a wrench to tighten/loosen the tie rod ends. You may have to remove the boots to see them, but they're there. I rebuilt my rack last year and replaced both tie rods. Not really high up on the complexity scale, but you definitely don't want to hold just the rack because you'll totally screw up the pinion (?) gears and seals inside.

Thanks Mike...the thing that still concerns me is getting adequate torrque...it seems that the only applicable wrenches are either long crescent or pipe wrenches...I haven't seen wrenches of those types that measure torque.
