As you can see in these early diagrams, '78-'79 originally had a coolant bleed line from the left cylinder head (23) to warm the crankcase vent hose, which went to the airbox these years. The heat to keep water vapor from freezing. Note also, that the early air filter had a metal screen on it, to prevent backfires from igniting the vapors!
I think it would be a good to connect a bleed line from the back of each head, to the overflow tank, to vent air/steam, and equalize the cylinder temps.
