Excellent suggestion. I removed the steering wheel, removed the turn signal AND lifted the pod off of the ignition but left it hooked up. No noise

I then reattatched the turn signals (3 wire groups) but left the pod up. No noise but no start.

When I put the pod back down the noise reappears. When I started this process the pod was only secured by the lsf bolt. It did not hve the bolt that goes through the ignition. Also the small cover for the lower part of the steering column came off easy but was a struggle get back on. The holes did not line up properley. When I had them alligned and tighten I could not turn my key. I had to loosen everything up just to get the key to turn. That was when I started the car, first heard the noise and first started tearing everything back apart.

 

Brian, it sounds like your re-assembly needs a second look. Anytime something comes apart, easy but goes together hard, it's a good indication that things aren't lined up properly. It sounds like you have created a binding on the ignition switch that is causing the problem.

 

Thanks Charley-That was Jim B advice Friday night when I was freakin out. I was just so darn happy to be able to turn the key everything else went by the wayside. I have eliminated the noise that was my concern but the pod is in pcs and I cannot get any .......Hey Charley, did I mention to you that I am a dumbass???? I was about to say that I could not get the car to ignite at all when I realised that I pulled the starter relay this morning and never put it back in.

Well now the car is running, noise free. Now how the crap do I get the pod back together with out starting this dance all over again. (What are you doing tommorrow)

BTW I have read Darien verrry detailed writeup on this but I cant say that it helped.

 

Often times on a maze job like that, just putting it aside for awhile and going back to it later, makes a world of difference. Try again, and take your time, making sure nothing is binding as you go along.

Brian - when I did my pod replacement and instrument cluster R&R, I followed Dave Anderson's pictorial instructions (Sharkskin pages). These instructions are for an OB, but were fine for my 86. Should be a good alternative source for you. They were essential for me - couldn't have done the job without:

Thanks Ed-That is awesome and I have not seen that one before. I have saved it and will study it this week when I am traveling. Maybe I can knock it out this weekend. I am kind of scared to do anything else B4 SITM The car was running fine before, the rest might have to wait.

Just to be sure, Brian. Battery disconnected when working on Pod.

 

hit the starter a few times with a hammer (not real hard). that might do it.

 

Brian, Disconnect the battery as has been said before and with your flash light look up under the pass side of the pod ( above the starter switch)you should see a side stepping bracket this has to be turned a certain way or the pod wont fit there is also a second screw holding this bracket to the pod install this screw to the pod and make it a little tighter than finger tight so you can move the stepped bracket to align with the lower pod bolt.
It cant be stressed enough that if you have power to the pod with it disconnected/unscrewwed you are risking burning up the CE panel/pod electrics. i think this will fix your fitment problem Brian

Thank you to Stan, Charley B, Zeus, Ed, Jim B , Alan and Big Dave. After assembling and dissasembling several times, giving up several times ,and finally taking the entire pod apart, only to put it back in and see smoke when I hooked up the battery. I have finally realised the original goal of a functioning turn signal. Rennlist is a tremendous asset to me and every other Porsche owner.

Now on to the 5 Qts of redline that have been sitting in my garage for a couple weeks, Putting on my new seat covers that just came in, waiting for my tail light sockets to arrive, installing new(to me) CD player, Fixing Qtr window tint and trim , and if I have time recharging my AC with the r22 stuff I bought over the winter. All b4 June 6th??? Well maybe not , but I have to have a goal.

 

Congrats. Brian. I knew you could do it. I assume your ignition is now working properly?

By the way, pick up another 4 quartz of Redline before you start the oil change.

Charley, Are you joking around ??? the redline was for the transmission.?.?

I guess I didnt say that. I read 4.5 quarts and pita. I have bought the extremley large hex tool and plan on opening the fill hole b4 draining, (thanks Ryan). I do not have a lift and my cut rate jacks really are good for changing a tire and not much else. If I can access the bolts I will probably end up running a tube through the battery box and trying to fill that way.
