Gas Gauge Not Working
#17
Thanks Mrmerlin. I got it off. I used a screw driver to gently pry upward from the bottom edge of the plug casing.
I ended up having a broken wire under the cover of the plug at the brown wire terminal. Soldered it back, cleaned the connections, and the gas gauge works again.
One thing I've learned from a few years of 928 ownership, if something doesn't come off readily, it's better to post here and ask why or how before just yanking on it and screwing it up!!

Can anyone help with a 1989 S4 gas gauge is not working. I'm a mid level wrencher and have cleaned/checked the fuel sending unit but still nothing - fuel gauge on the instrument cluster stays at empty.
its strange as the instrument cluster dashboard lights up when i turn the car on. But then when i turn the head lights on the dashboard/instrument cluster turns off/dark. Any thoughts much appreciated here.
I've pulled the black plug, cleaned and sprayed Detox.
I've pulled the sender. Took it apart, the resistor runs smoothly up and down the sender.
My 1989 S4 has only 30k original miles on it so everything is still pretty new - no corrosion on the inside wires of the sender.
My dashboard lights up, the Fuel and the Temperature gauges are the only ones that dont work.
My only thought is the black plug wire is a little stretched - but has some slack and i dont see why anyone would have removed it and pulled it.
Any help much appreciated.
