Default Help… fuel pump won’t run even with 30 and 87 jumped

I have an intermittent no-start problem on my ‘83, when I jumped the fuel pump relay it started, so I was thinking it was the rely. But even with the new rely installed, I still have the no start issue. The alarm has been bi-passed so I can rule that out. Sometimes when I jump the fuel pump rely I can hear it humming and she starts, other times the fuel pump hums for a few seconds and then stops, and I can’t restart the car. Other times it doesn’t hum at all even though I see current passing between 30 and 87…. and no surprise, it doesn’t start.

I’m thinking it’s the fuel pump… any thoughts?

with it jumped, if it doesn't run, do you still have 12v at the pump? If you do, then yes, you need a new pump.

Try cobbling a set of (Radio Shack) jumpers together and jumping DIRECT to the pump with a
12v car battery.
Fuse it if you feel the need. If Zee pump works - give it about 8-10 tests over a 1/2 hour- then you
have other issues. As Wally always says, " clean all contacts, relay and fuse".
Iswapped relays from my spare board and my 82 with my son's 81, oddly, all the relays worked in my car only one worked in his...go figure.

With relay jumpered, connecct a test light to the ground terminal on pump. If it lights up when you touch the positive terminal you know you have power and ground at pump.

Of course now the pump is working with the jumper so there's no point testing for 12v because clearly I have it. I guess I'll wait until it stops again, but I'm leaning towards the pump.

If you find the pumps not working somtimes you can get her going again by swapping the power to the pump IE hot goes to ground and Visa Versa, this usually will push the debris thats clogging the pump out and it works again however the tank may have dirt in it and so it would be a good idea to investigate
