Default Transaxle Fluid Change

I've had my '81 for a few months now, and it's been great so far.

I'm fixing little things, and freshening it up as I go.

This weekend was the transaxle fluid (it took me a couple of places to find a 17mm hex!). When the old fluid was draining, I swear it looked and smelled like transmission fluid instead of gear oil. Is their some type of gear oil or brand that resembles transmission fluid, or did the previous owner screw up? I've been driving regularly it for 3 months, and have had no issues.

I replaced it with 90wt gear oil, and I'll hope for the best.

Thanks,

Chris

What gbox do you have?

5 speed then yes the heavy oil; auto trans needs appropriate fluid at the right level.

Malcom,

A few weeks back I changed the auto trans fluid, and replaced the pan gasket.

Today I did the rear axle with the two big 17mm drain plugs. in the very back. The owners manual seemed to indicate 90 wt gear oil.

Thanks,

Chris

Chris,

The SAE rating of the oil is 90 gear oil, however, I replaced mine with Synthetic Oil which was very nearly colourless.

As previously asked, is your car an auto or a 5 speed?

When asking questions if is very helpful if you give MY and whether an auto or manual box initially, to allow us the give meaningful suggestions or answers.

I agree

However I guess and hope from this

that Chris, A/ has an AT and B/ appears to know what he is doing. If he has a 5sp he has been very inventive managaing to replace the pan gasket LOL.

Chris

SAE 90 and must be GL5, gear oil is correct for the AT differential . Only the 5sp needs a 75W90 and GL5 lubricant as the lube does both the tranny and the diff all in one. (Changing gear in a 5sp with SAE90 is impossible with a cold or even warm tranny)

It is an auto, and, as stated, I've changed that fluid. My apologies for not being clearer in the first note.

I'm thinking the previous owner filled the rear axle with automatic transmission fluid instead of gear oil.

Thanks,

Chris

Chris...........the differential is 90w oil; I used synthetic when I changed my cars.

Another tip; ensure you can remove the fill plug before draining otherewise you'll be unable to refill.

Malcolm,

You're not kidding . . . it took a 17mm hex key, and a 3 foot pipe as an extender!

How much harm do you suppose was done with the PO filling the rear axle with auto trans fluid? It appears all is well with the 90 wt in.

Thanks,

Chris
