Default Paint strippers that won't harm the wing?

Are there any paint strippers that won't harm the plastic the wng is made of? I have some light cracks now from the last touch up I did years ago and I don't want to paint over them. Ideas?

I should add this is the textured stock wing and not the body color GTS wing. I want tto retain the texture so sanding is out.

You might check with Mar-Hyde about their "Tailstrip II". I used it on some painted rubber and it was fine, but I won't guarantee it for your wing.

I purchased it to strip my son's wheels to give them a new clear coat. Their technical support indicated that I did not need to remove the tires, that it would not harm the rubber.

Anything that can eat paint will also eat plastic. Don't use chemical strippers of any kind.

I can't sand it, that will flatten the texture. There has to be something the shops use.

You are correct there is something they use. It is called the remove and replace with new method. The texture coating is a molded in thing which really cannot be replaced. If your car was in a shop to be repaired for body damage and the finish of the wing was also damaged, the insurance company would spring for a new wing as the labor to prep and refinish the wing to a pre-accident condition would be cost prohibitive. The problem with retaining that texture is that the material that produces it is not very receptive to being painted.

Perry since you have a rubber wing it should be able to be safely media blasted without damage, maybe chopped up nut shells should do the trick , check with a media blasting company, this same system works for removing the paint on the PU bumper covers without damage

I have seen the soda blasting and thought that might do the trick.

Soda might work as well but i would check first When I repainted my 79 I used the crushed shells to strip the front and rear PU, I did it outside since it really makes a mess
PU = Poly Urethane bumper covers

Ron,

On the underside where it won't show, try a wipe with brake-klean and see if that damages the original surface. It should take off the paint you used.

Most media blasting will damage the relatively soft plastic textured surface of the wing at least as fast as it will blast off the paint. If you decide to go this route, try an inconspicuous spot on the wing first.

If you decide that you can't get the paint off without damage, talk to your painter about painting it body color when you do the color change. Decide who's going to do the sanding and initial prep of of the old surface, then let him do final prep and paint it when he shoots the bumper shells.

I have some painting equipment you can use if you want to take a shot at it yourself sooner.

Thanks Dr. Bob..I will try the Brake Klean. As far as trying to paint myself, I 'll leave that to the pro's.
