Default ID an engine by the numbers?

Just in case things don't go well with my glass bead removal project, I picked up a complete replacement engine. Good runner with 90K on it. Very dry, no leaks anywhere.

The seller claims it is an 82' 4.7 Non-"S". I was looking for a simple 4.5 and I think that is what I have. The number is M28103 8290490. Can anyone tell me how to decipher the numbers?

How would this engine be better or worse than my original 79' ? Cams the same? Compression the same?

Its very likely M28/03, not M28103. This means its '78-79 US 4.5L engine.

Thank you ! In that case, I got exactly what I wanted.

What is the significance of the 2nd, lower row of numbers? ( 8290490 )

So the 82 in the beginning of this serial number does not denote the model year?

I am guessing that is what the seller was thinking.

Go to www.928gt.com under Tips/Links and Tech spec.
Dave has all of the engine codes listed by year and type.

Whups- posted errantly to old thread.
Copgrats on the spare, cherish those '79 cams.

As second row says its 490th '79MY manual gearbox engine for US market. Its possible numbers didn't start from 0001 even though factory papers say so but its certainly in the middle of '79 MY production. Very likely made in late 1978.
