rear axles turning in park?????
I just rebuilt my auto transmission and reinstalled it in the car ('88 S4). The tranny does not even have fluid in it yet. I put the transmission in PARK, turn the axles a bit and can hear the locker snap into place. I went to torque the CV joint to the transmission and the rearend is turning. What gives? The diff does have fluid and it is LSD. Am I overcoming the LSD? Is this normal? This does not seem right to me. What keeps the car from rolling down a hill in PARK?
Can someone offer an explanation before I give up? I do not want to remove this transaxle again.
Thanks

If your LSD is working, the wheels should turn in the same direction when the gearbox is in neutral. In park or in gear (manual), the wheels will turn in opposite directions, with resistance felt. That resisitance is the LSD clutch friction, hopefully somewhere north of 25 lbs/ft or so breakaway.
