Let me guess... in the bumper covers, there are plugged holes which when removed, the bumper substrate will receive the tow hook. Kinda link BMW and what not.

Hole in the rear bumper above the plate IIRC.

Been a while since looked back there.

I think you will find your two models have different mounts. The S4 is as the picture above, in the grille area. The 83 should be under a bumper cover plug on the pax side, a bit outboard of the S4 one. Note that the front S4 socket is prone to corrosion due to get road water and rubbis on it. Originally they came with an alloy plug screwed in...which tended to corrode in place, and the allen key provided to undo it would break when you used it. Check this out and rectify before you find you need it. I have drilled out two of these rusted in plugs, and cleaned up the thread with a special tap I had made. FWIW, the threads are 'Knuckle', early cars 15mm OD, later are 20mm OD, same pitch at 8TPI. The replacement for the alloy plug to protect the threads is like a big rubber comforter!

Getting the front plugs out on the Pre S4s can be tought. The metal claws can really dig in if they are corroded. Use some penetrating oil then try to pop it out.

Thanks.

The flatbed/tow guy and I couldn't figure out what to grab to winch the car onto the trailer. I ended up instructing him to pull it up backwards by the crossmember under the transmission, which was scary at the time and still scary in retrospect . Then, the other night we found the toolkit, and what looked like a tow eye, hence the question above.
