Towing 5speed on car dolley
Hello all Rennlist Dudes and dudettes
Well, its getting close to "Sharks in the Park" and I will be towing my Electric 928 sixty miles each way with a car dolley. Its the kind of trailler that only lifts two wheels off the ground.
I was going to lift the front wheels and let the rear roll with the manual transmission in neutral. I dont think this will be a problem since only the main shaft in the transmission will rotate and that is lubricated by the gear oil in the transmission. I did a shorter run of 38 miles round trip to a NorCal karting event a few months ago and all was fine.
Just wanted to know if anyone has experience with this type of trailer.
Thanks,
Jeff

Umm thats not quite true, you CAN tow the 928 auto but only at a maximum of 30 mph and also only for 50 miles, you can also tow/bump start the 928 auto at 20 mph...bit hard to run that fast though lol

I would not consider that TOWING but yes you can abuse an automatic a little for a little while. Now I know how you plan to get home from the speed record run ! if needed.

Lol
I keep forgetting how long distances are in the US....over here in the UK , 50 miles would easily get you to the next town or two....over there of course it wont....

Yes I drove 1,300 plus miles on Monday from West Texas to California I was happy when I got within 100 miles of home since I have AAA 100 mile "free" towing ! It is $7.00 per mile after that.

The size of the WHOLE UK in area according to Google is slightly LESS than Oregon lol. (I dont even know whether Oregon is big or little in your terms lol )
But our Breakdown services AA/RAC have no mileage limits, so if I broke down at the tip of Scotland they would bring me home to the South Coast at no charge...

from the 1980 owners manual ..."This is very important because the transmission will not be adequately lubricated due to the lack of oil pressure normally provided when the engine is running " ..." Your Porsche with automatic transmission cannot be started by pushing or towing.."

Really? I could have sworn I read something in the manuals that a 928 auto could be push-started if brought to a high enough speed. Maybe only for the later 4-speed trannies?

'87 Owners manual....
Being towed
When the engine is not running, the oil pump
for the automatic gearbox is not driven, and
therefore the gearbox is not lubricated. The
following points must therefore be noted:
1. Selector in position N.
2. Towing speed must not exceed 50 km/h
(30 mph)
3. Maximum towing distance 50 km (30
miles)
4. For distances over 50 km (30 miles) the
vehicle must be lifted by the rear axle or
transported on a trailer.
Tow or push starting
If your Porsche is fitted with an automatic
gearbox, it can be tow or push started with
the ignition switched on.
In order to do this, the selector lever must be
shifted to position N, the vehicle must be ac-
celerated to approx. 60km/h, at which speed
the selector lever must be shifted to position
2 without the accelerator pedal being depre-
ssed

Just goes to show, you should always read the owners manual for your specific model.... I for one, would not have hesitated to TOW start a 90MY as it was OK on the 87... sooo.. why not....
Now should the occasion ever arrise, I know that it aint a good idea....
As for push starting.... running at 60km/h, no way i can do that anyway :-)
