That really suck. I canīt understand why these cars shall be so darn slow

I mean, the Pontiac was about as heavy, with the same amount of horses, 928īs are low on torque thou and the final gear ratio is higher 2,54 vs 3,27 but what is it that makes 928īs that slow? Weight distribution is really good, especially compared to a Pontiac and therefor standing start shoud be fair.

Isnīt it even possible to brake into low 14īs if I gut the car of its interior to get rid of some serious pounds?

Remember, he has an X-pipe on there. That's good for ~20-30RWHP... he also has 2.54 gears instead of 2.2. I would say he will be in the low 14s.

I got some examples of euros with street tires that raced in sweden at streetraces and these cars are stock as far as I know.

928 GTS = 8,339 sec 138,32 km/h at 1/8 mile.
928 S = 8,959 sec 128,27 km/h at 1/8 mile.

And one that raced consistent times at a real dragstrip. This car had wider rear wheels. Not sure about if it is modified further.

928 GTS = 9,03 sec 129,18 km/h at 1/8 mile.

Those 660ft times and speeds you posted indicate that they should have been able to go on and record ET's probably anywhere between 13.2 to 14.0

Can depend on how good their 60ft time was also....

Can also take loads of practice.....

I have a stroked 5liter (347) with 6speed g/box (T56) in a FORD Falcon, back home Australia.... During an event (drag night) i've had quite a spread in times.... from 14.2 early in the evening to around consistent 13.6's and a best of 13.482

Here's an example of a time slip similar to the figures you posted.....

[60ft - 2.072]
[660ft - 9.016] - [mph 79.85]
[ET 13.953] - [mph 98.99]

So I would have to question also... why shouldn't it be possible to hit high 13's low 14's??

Hi

Mine is an S2...more powerful that his S...

Without my Nitrous, the book time on mine is a 15.3....thats why

To answer his other question about weight saving....yes if you strip out a LOT of weight you will gain hp and torque but as a rough figure , for ever 40kg you strip out ,I would guess you will get around 5 hp, and unless you strip out hundreds of kgs, you are still not going to run a low 14, sorry...

The other reason I am sure he wont is my experience as a Top Fuel Crew chief, its EXTREMELY hard to gain a second on a drag track.....you normally talk about gaining 10ths of a second or in Top Fuel cars even 100ths...

Gaining a second is not really possible, although an LSD may help a LOT...

All the best Brett

Sorry, but the book time on the EuroS 1/4 mile is a bunch of BS. How can it be that a US '86 with 288hp and the 2.2 rear gets 14.1s while the EuroS with 310hp and 2.73 rear gets 15.3? There's no way that adds up. A Euro or EuroS should be low 14s, just like the early US 32 valve cars.

Brett,

S2 engines do have 310 horses and my 32v got 288 stock. But S2 īs got the torque higher in the powerband. 32V got itīs peak torque as low as 3000 rpms. With X-pipe and RMB my 5 liter 32v should have more power than your S2. And what about final gear ratio, what ratio is your equipped with? What year is your car? What tranny?

My experiance from ponycars tell me that it CAN vary a great portion of similar cars perfomance, even if bone stock. Now Iīm talking about IROC-Z and Trans AMīs but I suspect it might be the same thing among Porsches too.

One thing is a littlebit interesting about this. When I looked around for a Porsche last summer I drove several 944 turbos and two 928īs, both S and S4. I can tell that it vary alot of "feelable" performance in turbos and that isnīt all that strange due to true boostlevels.

For 928īs I can mention that I testdrove an -87 S4 before drove my S. That was the first 928 I ever drove. That car was really lifeless, no power what so ever and I was really dissapointed. I told the owner that I couldnīt understand why Porsche didnīt supercharged it from the beginning since its chassi could take so much more power. I was really impressed by itīs handling thou. It did have 17" Cup 1 rims.

I walked away because of my dissapointment and thought about were these 320 horses gone, maybe left in Germany? A couple of days later my father found an 928 S -86 in the newspaper. With the S4 experiance in mind I was rather sceptic but the price was reasonable and I stuffed in my family in our BMW and of we went.

When I first saw that -86 S I still was sceptic and my wife told me to atleast take it for a ride. So I did and after a couple of full throttle runs I was stunned! This car supposed to have 10 horses less than the S4 (didnīt know about the 32v engine, thought it was 4,7 engine as I didnīt know alot about 928īs) but would have beat the pants of the S4 I drove previously.

I bought the car and didnīt think much about it untill I start searching more info about the 928. Then I understood that the engine was a littlebit odd. All markins in the car told that it was a 16v 4,7 liter but it wasnīt. Nothing made sense. The early 32v engine were never sold in Sweden so this made me woundering.

I contacted Porsche in germany and they confirmed that my car was one of a kind, built originally for the 1986 IAA exhibition in Frankfurt. The engine was stock and the cassis red metallic was a special paint for 1986. Once again I was stunned

Well, maybe a little off topic but what I want to tell is that some cars doesnīt leave the power itīs supposed to, like that S4 I drove.

/Tobias

Yes Tobias many 20 year old cars for a number of reasons do NOT make the power they did when NEW. The S-4 was no doubt down on power. Enjoy your new Porsche and your E T will be what ever it is. The Euro 32 valve was a green option for 86 had lower compression than the USA variant.

It's never a good idea to condemn a whole model line of cars just because you drove one of them that was not in top shape...

Thatīs true, my compression is 9,3:1 = superchargerfriendly

Thats a cool story on finding your car Tobias. Rare car to have over there. Sounds like the S4 you drove was waaaay out of tune. Not uncommon for 9-2-8's to be all over the charts as far as performance goes due to intricate variables that most don't know how to service or neglect. I would think you should be able to run high-13's stock if you get it tuned right and get the setup and launch technique down. I can appreciate what Brett is saying about fighting for 1/10s of a second, but thats assuming that the driver is a consistent pro. Throw an amateur who is a work-in-progress skill wise into the equation and tuning and set up that is all over the map, and the results will vary by several seconds +/-
