Does anybody know how to get this to work, it clicks in but is not heating up and the light is not coming on, has anyone got pictures of the wiring set up, maybe mine is incorrect.

Pull out your ash tray, use a test light, with your ignition turned on and see if you have any power going to it.

If not, check your fuses 1st, then the wiring.

How bizarre - I just did the exact same job on a friend's '83!

Just a quick question on the cig lighter. As I was pulling in to my parking spot at work I noticed the cigarette lighter and wondered if it worked. So, like a 2 year old I had to push the button. Problem is that the button didn't pop back up.

So, the question is this. Does power go to the unit once I turn the engine off or remove the key? I want to make sure I don't either kill the battery, or set my car on fire from the cig lighter staying hot.

When I get home I'll pull the ashtray and see if I have power or if I need to adjust the clamps........that is if the battery hasn't gone flat or I haven't had a Car-B-Q.

Unless your is direct wired, the power should be cut when you turn off the ignition.

Interesting thought... I don't have a schematic, but I wonder if the lighter is tied into the door solenoid circuit. The power windows will work with the key off until a door is opened... I wonder if the lighter does too?

Some years the lighter is powered all the time and allows you to use the battery float charger plugged into the lighter socket the later models it is switched power and only powered when the key is on.

You should be able to pull the lighter with your finger tips, even if it is in the down position.

Jim, the lighter in my '80 model only comes on with the key. Is that normal, or did somebody wire it that way?
TIA

I am not sure what years do or do not, just that they vary. I never use the thing myself.

I lost my cigar lighter when I installed the supercharger kit. Last year I needed
one again for the new GPS, so we put one in next to the center console. The
only problem was that it only worked when the ignition was off. Of course when
we tested it in the garage it worked fine. I didn't find out that it didn't work with the
ignition on until I started the car to go to the race (you know last minute preparations).
Had to scurry to find another power source once we got there.

Now it's on all the time.
